Sunday Funday: Now With Pumpkin Spice Edition

Okay! After the big storm the other day this fall change is starting to get serious. Later fall color change and leaves falling later are a couple of the very noticeable signs of climate change. Whereas a couple of decades ago, trees were almost naked by now, today many of the leaves are just starting to change.

Our little town used to change out their leaf clean up trucks into snowplows on November 1st until just about 5 years ago. Most of the leaves are still on the trees until November 1st nowadays. But there is one thing that hasn’t changed much – a pile of leaves is still the greatest thing in the world to jump in! (The one and only Stella – 3 minutes of joy!)

Thank you for pointing out that many of us living in Iowa have seen climate change at work in just the last few decades. More rain, bigger rain events, warmer temperatures, it’s all obvious. But some Iowans don’t want to see that and don’t want others to see it.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, IDALS, sends out a weekly “Crop Progress and Condition Report” email message. And that message uses the temperatures of the last three decades(!!!!!) as the “normal’ against which it measures whether Iowa temperatures are now above or below “normal”(!!!) This seems to be the classic misleading approach of the frog in the pan of water on the stove.

Of course Secretary Naig did show up at the latest Trump rally. I’m sure it’s no accident that IDALS is barely talking about climate change even as it becomes so obvious. I am grateful to KCCI-TV for hiring a good meteorologist who does talk about climate change during the weather report, and does it well. Thank you, Chris Gloninger.

Yep, I found out about the “normal” temperature calculations about three months ago. Most of us would probably think of that as an unmoving standard. So when we see “normal” now that is the average since 1990. Really makes you wonder what the “normal” was in the 1950s or ’60s. My recollection is that 1990 or at least by 2000 was when we started seeing later and later color change plus earlier leafing in the spring.
