Labor Update: Stand With Striking Construction Workers On UI Campus

Here’s another opportunity to stand with striking construction workers on the University of Iowa campus. Wed July 27 11am-1pm across from West Lawn. More details below.

This construction project is setting a precedent for future work on campus, such as rebuilding the performing arts center and building new dormitories.  That’s why it’s so important to send a message NOW that we won’t stand for the university hiring out-of-state contractors and leaving unionized Iowa workers in the dust.

See you at the rally!

Stop the attack on iowa workers

The University of Iowa hired Chicago-based Walsh Construction to construct the $78 million Papajohn Biological Research building.

Local subcontractors submitted bids to Walsh with the good faith understanding that if the UI hired Walsh, Walsh would hire them.

Now Walsh has turned its back on these Iowa companies and their workers!!!

That’s not right!!!

With the contract in hand, Walsh broke their promises and hired other subcontractors from other country.

Here’s the problem:

This project is funded with $10 Million Dollars in I-Jobs money. That’s Iowa taxpayer money aimed at putting Iowans back to work. It was not meant to employ people from Colorado, Texas, Florida, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Here’s how to help:
Stand with the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Building Trades to deliver the message…

IOWA JOBS FOR IOWA WORKERS!
When: July 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: 310 Newton St. Iowa City, Iowa across the street from West Lawn and the College of Nursing

Enjoy a light lunch and visit with other concerned citizens and including Iowa Legislators to stop the loss of Iowa jobs.

Another way to help:

Call Walsh Construction at 312-563-5400 and tell them to hire local workers on jobs paid for by Iowa Citizens.

Stand Strong. Stand United.
