Voting Machine Hacking

  Voting Machine Hacking

By Rapid Response

This is a short, truly alarming video of a demonstration conducted by Princeton University of how votes can easily be stolen with use of malicious software.  And you don't have to have a corrupt, Republican Secretary of State for it to happen.  Please watch this video, then tell your friends and contact your elected officials about this problem.

So, what do you think of absentee ballots? They seem to have similar problems and are less susceptible to audit.

Absentee ballots that are carelessly marked may not get counted in the races that were mis-marked, as when you purposely or accidentally vote for too many candidates.
Or your signature may be challenged. Or the ballot may get lost in the mail or “lost” by the courier. It's best to vote in person, other factors being equal.
But absentee ballots are certainly more auditable than a paperless system! The vote is on paper. The paper was marked by the voter. It can be recounted. The machine count can be verified by a hand count. Spoiled ballots can be examined for cause of spoilage. The auditing capacity seems complete to me.

This to me is very scary – the fact that votes can be hijacked with a simple card. The story doesn't even get into what happens if the machine is unplugged, and some card stuck into the front. Or someone gets their hands on multiple voter cards. The outcomes are endless. I miss my butterfly ballot already.
