This is a video from last year when the Iowa legislature was working on a bill to keep Bayer from being sued for illnesses caused by their farm chemicals. (1.5 minutes)
We got this email from a CCI member about a week ago. With the inauguration coming it seemed better to hold this until a little closer to the event.
If we have any hope of changing policy at the state or national level this year we must be active.
“I first heard about CCI when I was looking for help with pesticide drift. I am staying involved because it’s up to us to Defeat Bayer’s Cancer Gag Act.
My family and I live outside of town, near a field. When we moved in I was assured that the field had never been sprayed and we wouldn’t be impacted.
That changed suddenly one day when we were outside and a crop duster came right over our house. My husband and I quickly ran inside, the taste of chemicals in our mouth. A few days later I found out I was pregnant.
No we have a young child, who we want to let play outside without fear of being exposed to harmful chemicals – but that just isn’t the case right now.
This is an important issue that should be taken seriously. But this legislative session Bayer is taking us further in the wrong direction.
In every state across the country, including Iowa, Bayer is working to introduce a bill that would try and silence individuals harmed by the chemicals they produce.
That’s not right. That’s why I am asking you to join us in Des Moines on Feb 10 for a day of action. Will you join us?
Here are some more details of what to expect:
What: A Day of Action at the state capitol! We will have a rally, information to talk to legislators, and other ways to take action on this important issue.
New reporting indicates that RFK Jr. is lying about his record on vaccines to get confirmed to lead HHS. While he’s telling GOP senators that he only wants “transparency” about vaccines, his record tells a fully different story. He has said that “there’s no vaccine that is safe or effective” and has spent years pushing dangerous conspiracy theories, including the long-debunked theory that vaccines cause autism – and his financial disclosures that dropped earlier today indicate that Kennedy and his law firm could still stand to profit from his anti-vaccine lawsuits. In response, Protect Our Care Executive Director Brad Woodhouse issued the following statement:
“RFK Jr. is gaslighting Senators and lying through his teeth. Despite a decade or more long record of leading the anti-vaccine movement in this country, claiming that none of them are safe, petitioning to have them removed, and preying on the fears of parents, he is now saying whatever he needs to say to get confirmed. RFK Jr.’s lies should not fool anyone. He is a con man who has been paid to promote anti-vaccine theories that have no scientific basis. If confirmed, he won’t follow the science or trust the experts but instead will embrace fringe ideas that will put the lives of scores of Americans in jeopardy. Mr. Brainworm is the last person we need in charge of America’s health care.”
RFK Jr.claims “there’s no vaccine that is safe and effective.” RFK Jr. has been a leading anti-vaccine voice for decades, falsely correlating vaccines with autism and calling vaccination a “Holocaust.” He says he urges strangers with babies not to vaccinate their children.
RFK Jr. helped fuel a deadly measles vaccine in Samoa. 83 people died in a measles epidemic in Samoa after Kennedy visited the country and helped fuel a wave of vaccine hesitancy. He also questioned whether the MMR vaccine is necessary at all.
RFK Jr.called the COVID-19 vaccine a “crime against humanity.” RFK Jr. also targeted dangerous and disproven anti-vaccine propaganda at the Black community during the pandemic.
RFK Jr. has spread outrageous lies about the polio vaccine. RFK Jr. spread conspiracy theories that the polio vaccine “cause[d] more death than it avert[ed]” and falsely claimed that polio’s eradication was not due to the vaccine.
RFK Jr. opposes the HPV vaccine — a critical tool to prevent cervical cancer. RFK Jr. has filed multiple lawsuits alleging that the HPV vaccine is unsafe despite numerous studies that have shown that the vaccine is incredibly effective against cervical cancer.
RFK Jr. opposes vaccines for infectious diseases across the board. Kennedy has also spread false claims linking flu shots, Hepatitis B vaccines, and even 19th century vaccines to rare diseases, and his anti-vaccine views could undermine efforts to contain and prevent the spread of bird flu.

Progress Iowa is the state’s progressive communications hub with a network that reaches nearly 100,000. We conduct research, develop winning messages, communicate with Iowans about critical policy issues, and empower people who want to improve our state.
Editor’s note:
In a related story on Thursday we have Kennedy receiving fees from pharmaceutical litigation and will continue to do so even if confirmed as head of HHS:
RFK to keep earning from drug litigation if confirmed as HHS secretary, raising ethical concerns
Nominee’s history of controversial views on vaccines fuels debate over his appointment
In a newly filed ethics report, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he plans to keep his financial stake in some pharmaceutical litigation if confirmed as Health and Human Services Secretary.
Kennedy said in the report that he has earned more than $2.4 million referring clients to the law firm WisnerBaum. That firm is suing a drug maker over its HPV vaccine, Gardasil.
Kennedy said he is contracted to receive 10% of contingency fees awarded to the firm.
Ethics records show he intends to keep collecting fees related to past referrals. That could pose an issue because, as head of Health and Human Services, he would be in a position to oversee policies that affect drug makers.
This whole administration will be nothing more than a giant confidence scheme to see which of Trump’s buddies can grift the biggest pot of money. If you voted for these criminals you should be ashamed.
Trump’s onslaught of day one executive orders are an attack on the environment, our health, and our communities. Remember – he’s causing chaos on purpose so that we don’t fight back. When we’re overwhelmed, it’s hard to know where to start.
That’s why we’re inviting you to join our Climate Action Hours. In just one virtual gathering a month you can get the latest updates on Trump’s anti-environment agenda, learn what we’re doing about it, and help us take meaningful steps to defeat it.
With Trump in office, a lot of us are asking: What now?
The most dangerous thing we can imagine is for our movement to stop speaking up. To retreat into inaction, give into feeling overwhelmed, and believe the lie that everyday people can’t do anything to make change.
So we need to stay focused. If you’ve been looking for a way to cut through the noise and do something that will actually make a difference, we’ve got you covered.
Already, the cracks in Trump’s administration are showing. Republicans in the House have the slimmest majority – meaning that they will need every last vote to advance their pro-fossil fuel agenda. We have a real shot at peeling off some Republicans who have seen the benefits of climate action, clean energy, and environmental protection in their home districts. Clean energy is popular across blue and red states – it’s reducing climate pollution and creating good jobs, while saving everyday people money on energy costs.
If our Members of Congress hear from enough of their constituents that we want them to preserve climate and clean energy programs, we can do our part to stopping drastic cuts to programs our people and communities rely on. We’re going to spend the next few months putting as much pressure on them as we can by calling their offices, posting on their social media pages, getting the media involved, and more.
Can’t make it at that time? Sign up anyway to receive a recording and instructions to take this month’s actions at the time that works for you.
What: Monthly Climate Action Hours Where: These will be held on Zoom, so you can join wherever you live and take action alongside hundreds of other Sierra Club advocates. When: One hour each month. The first Climate Action Hour will be on January 29 at 1 pm PT/ 4 pm ET. Save your spot here!
Everyday people joining together to demand change has always been how progress happens. And together, we’ve accomplished a lot. In the last month before President Biden left office, we successfully pushed his administration to declare two new national monuments in California, finalize studies of methane gas exports (LNG), block offshore drilling, protect grizzly bears, improve outdoor equity, and more.
At the national level, progress on climate is clearly not looking good. We’re up against rising authoritarianism and an administration beholden to corporate polluters who are padding their pockets while we pay the price. But despair isn’t an option, because the stakes are too high.
The only way to stop climate disasters from getting stronger and more deadly each year is by working together through individual, collective, corporate, and government action. The best antidote to despair is action, and the time to act is now.
The Sierra Club can do this work in every U.S. state and Puerto Rico thanks to advocates like you. Even if you only have one hour free to get involved, we’ll help you take actions that are critical to making real change.
During our hour together, you’ll learn more about the moment we’re in, what actions we’ll be taking to protect clean energy and climate action, and why those actions are essential to building a livable future. Together we’ll do things like call our federal representatives, comment on social media or a news article, write a letter to the editor, practice storytelling, and more.
Thank you for showing up to fight for our planet and future, despite how difficult this moment is. The next four years will be a marathon, not a sprint. Thank you for staying with us for the next steps.
The climate crisis is accelerating, regardless of the election results. 2024 was the hottest year on record. It brought devastation to Spencer, Greenfield, and other towns in Iowa; hurricane devastation to Florida and North Carolina; and now the heartbreaking wildfire devastation to Los Angeles County.
At this very moment, we know the new Administration is taking us in the wrong direction on climate policy, withdrawing from the Paris Agreement and stopping the permitting of all new wind power that requires a federal permit, taking down the White House climate policy page, and promoting more fossil fuels that will literally add more fuel to the climate fire.
These developments call for people who are concerned to come together, to build community, and to chart a new path forward.
One opportunity to come together is “Called to Climate Action,” a conference sponsored by Iowa Interfaith Power & Light at Grinnell College on Saturday, March 29, from 9 am to 3 pm. I am currently the board chair of Iowa IPL, and I hope you can join me there.
More details are coming up, but we will have a strong program of workshops and a keynote speaker for you to help bring together the movements for climate action with racial justice and economic justice.
College students and faculty are free, thanks to the generosity of Grinnell College and our donors. For others, we are asking for a $35 registration fee to cover the cost of lunch and help with other conference expenses, too.
I do want to mention that if you are interested in state level advocacy, please join the Iowa Environmental Council and its members for its State Capitol legislative advocacy day on Wednesday, February 19. Here is a link with more details:
Locally, in Cedar Rapids, the Cedar Wapsi Group of the Sierra Club is organizing its annual dinner for Saturday night, March 29 (after the Iowa IPL conference) and Eco-Fest is being planned for Saturday, April 26. If you know of other events in the Cedar Rapids area that are of interest, please let me know.
I hope this is helpful, and I hope to see you March 29.

A young Des Moines police officer who was helping us with a racoon issue hadn’t yet been indoctrinated into how to handle the perception of crime in our neighborhood. He asked us point blank, “Do you hear gunfire at night?” My day starts around 3:00 a.m., so gunfire occurs regularly, sometimes within the neighborhood, but also across the street where a
paved trail system winds along a wooded area by the Des Moines River and poaching runs rampant. We have the luxury to lock the doors, pull the blinds, stay away from the windows, and stick earbuds in to drown out the potential threat. Others aren’t so fortunate.
At our neighborhood association meeting, the appointed Des Moines community police officer gave an update on recent crime activity. There had been a domestic stabbing and a fatal gang related shooting. Even though both tragedies happened only a block away, they were targeted violent deaths. The presentation was delivered to reassure the audience that we needn’t be concerned about our safety or property values. Some didn’t buy into this message. Longterm residents sold their homes to investors to convert into rentals.
Flashing lights greeted us on our walk a short time ago. The usual police cars and fire trucks were joined by the coroner and criminal investigation vans. The vehicles were parked at the entrance to the Tai Dam Village, which borders part of the Trestle to Trestle Trail in our neighborhood. Although the vehicles were running, there were no occupants and no way to find out what happened. So, we ordered an incident report from the Des Moines Police Department.
It stated that a homeless woman was walking in the woods, going to a homeless camp when she noticed a female hanging from a tree. She called the police with someone else’s
phone, because she did not have one.
Officers located the female in the woods hanging from a tree…by her neck with a rope tied to a branch. Medics and ME were called and declared the female deceased. IDENT was called and processed the scene. ME and IDENT didn’t notice anything suspicious about the suicide. ME took possession of the body. The deceased female had no ID on her person and was not able to be identified.
The incident occurred on 11/04/2024 at 13:51 and the case was closed on 11/05/2024.
The victim was Elizabeth Sue Phillips. According to her obituary, she enjoyed styling hair, going on walks, converting new items out of old ones, and spending time with friends and family, including her children, nieces and nephews. She also left behind a grandchild, “Although she left us too soon, Elizabeth’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She will be remembered for her vibrant personality and contagious laughter.”
Given Elizabeth’s hobbies, it made more sense for her to choose a different form of suicide. Hanging is violent. Men prefer it along with fatal gunshots. Women tend to prefer slicing wrists or swallowing a bottle of pills. What wasn’t in the police report was Elizabeth’s activities before her death.
She had visited a campsite just down the trail from where her body was found. It was one of many encampments that lay scattered along the banks of the Des Moines River. Mary, who lives in a tent with her veteran husband and a lovely dog described the events leading up to the hanging. Although they are labeled as homeless camps, these are complex communities of survivors.
Mary described how Elizabeth had visited their camp with a known unsavory male character. Food is shared with fellow survivors and that was the first and last time Mary
saw Elizabeth. The night before she died, a loud truck was heard driving down the trail in the direction of the hanging tree. Mary and her husband chose to remain in the safety of their tent. Their dog scares away the wild animals that pose a threat. Nothing can protect against the persistent gunfire or an unidentified vehicle that invades their otherwise peaceful existence. Mary carries doubts about the circumstances of Elizabeth’s death. She also understands why members of these closely knit communities may simply give up, tired of living in fear.
The government plays a key role in disrupting their feeling of safety and security. Periodic signs are posted along the trail with maps outlining where and when they will infiltrate and take down these encampments or homes. It’s a Whac-A-Mole game. As one campsite is destroyed, another one pops up. Mary’s campsite is now gone. Although I look for her along the trail on my daily walk, the only thing left is the memory of the pain, fear and
resignation that she carries.

“Avoid pronouncing the phrases everyone else does. Think up your own way of speaking even if only to convey the thing you think everyone is saying. Make an effort to separate yourself from the internet. Read books.”
“The internet is not only predictable. It predictifies. It makes you more predictable.”
“As the language is impoverished your thought is impoverished as well.”
“‘Be kind to our language’ means spending less time on the internet. It means not being triggered by the internet. If you have to be on the internet try not to be its agent; not spread its memes out to other human beings. If you’re in touch with another human being make sure that you’ve paused and cleansed and you say something human to that person rather than something that is flowing through you because of the algorithms you’ve just been exposed to..”
Dr. Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. joined The Weekend ahead of the holiday honoring her father to discuss why she thinks Americans must pay attention to both his legacy and Trump’s inauguration on Monday.
What a juxtaposition. The worst president and a convicted felon will be sworn into office on a federal holiday set aside for the remembrance of a man recognized for the use of non-violence in his efforts to turn America to practice what it preaches.
These days many want to remember Martin Luther King almost as a quiet man who stood up against people in the racist South. This is the simplistic picture that has been created by the media over the decades. Such a simplistic picture has been used by politicians and media to alter the reality that was MLK.
In a recent article for The Washington Post author Johnathan Eig points out the difference between the real King and the one who is portrayed during the holiday remembrances. Martin Luther King was very radical for his times. He fought not just the racism of the times but extended himself to all human discriminations: Here Eig discusses how King’s vision had become sanitized when the holiday began to be observed:
At the time of the first celebration in 1986, M. Carl Holman, president of the National Urban Coalition, expressed concern that politicians might use the holiday to disguise their opposition to King’s objectives, paying homage to the civil rights leader to provide cover for policies and beliefs they knew King would abhor. “Frankly,” Holman said, “it’s easier for a lot of people to honor Martin when he’s safely dead and deal with him as if he were just a visionary, and not a practical and very pragmatic protester against the status quo.”
It took less than a week for Holman’s prediction to come true, as President Ronald Reagan delivered a radio address denying allegations that his administration sought to do away with affirmative action and weaken civil rights enforcement. “We want a color-blind society,” Reagan said. “A society, that in the words of King, judges people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
That “content of their character” quote — taken from King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech — has proved to be one of the most dangerous weapons in the effort to airbrush his legacy. It is used widely to suggest that King wished for a color-blind society — that he would have opposed affirmative action, for example — and that all he ever stood for was peace, harmony and coalition-building.
In 2017, when I interviewed entertainer and activist Harry Belafonte, he wondered aloud whether the holiday had done more harm than good to King’s legacy, making us forget the man’s radicalism, even erasing talk of racism.
King never wanted White Americans to get comfortable with discrimination. He never remotely suggested that his dream of a society free of racial discrimination should make us blind to the persistence of racism and inequality.
So as you remember Dr. King, remember that he was leading a movement that was disparaged by most Americans. Remember how he was hunted by the FBI and by citizens. His life was in danger daily, yet he stood up against the purveyors of racism and hate. The weapon he used was non-violence. He admirably gave his life trying to raise all people.
And the other man at center stage tomorrow is a man who has done nothing but sow hate and division all his life. He has spent his time on earth exploiting anybody and every body he comes in contact with. He breaks laws with impunity and has no qualms about undermining our system of government. He is the epitome of all that is bad in this country.
In a country that purports to honor Christian principals we shot the man who truly upheld those principals while we elect the one who treats such principals with total disdain.
Well when you live in Iowa you’ve got to expect that in the middle of January it will get cold, very cold. But this batch of cold is milder than winters I can remember. (Uh-oh here comes the ‘back when I was a kid’ story) I go back to the days of going out to start your car an letting it run for half an hour so it would start in the morning to get a person to work.
The coldest I remember was -35. Remember that climate change tends toward warmer temperatures, but extremes may be exceeded – so it is possible that there may be colder days ahead.
Just listening to John Fugelsang. He reminds us that most authoritarians get really rankled when they are ridiculed. We hope to do our best to ridicule the touchy and hopefully temporary occupant of the White House.
MLK Day tomorrow – remember why we have a day for him, please.

Once again we turn this page over to our friends at Progress Iowa for their succinct analysis of the State of the State from Governor Reynolds. Yet again Reynolds falls for Iowa.
Des Moines, Iowa — Progress Iowa executive director Matt Sinovic issued the following statement in response to Governor Reynolds’ Condition of the State Address:
“Tonight, the governor laid out her vision for Iowa, and once again, it’s clear she plans to side with wealthy corporations and the rich, while making life harder for Iowa’s working families. Under Reynolds’ leadership, Iowa’s students and teachers have been left to face growing challenges with fewer resources, children have been forced to go without the meals they need to thrive, and hateful legislation targeting already vulnerable communities has been passed. All with little support from the majority of Iowans.”
“Iowans deserve a leader who fights for families, not corporate donors and their profits. Gov. Reynolds’ priorities are out of touch with the values and needs of our state. We will continue to advocate for a government that invests in our communities and works for everyone–not just the privileged few.”
