Iowa House Passes Legislation To Deny LGBTQ Panic Defense

The Iowa House unanimously approved legislation to “send a very loud message that you don’t get to murder someone, you do not get to harm someone, you don’t get to assault someone simply because you disagree with their lifestyle,” according to the floor manager of House File 2503.  – Sioux City Journal

“The Gay and Trans Panic Defense or LGBTQ+ Panic Defense, is a defense used by individuals who seek to evade personal responsibility for violent crimes including murder by arguing that their violent actions were justified by finding out another person’s gender identity or sexual orientation or by receiving a non-violent pass or come on by an LGBTQ+ person.” – Rep. Bennett (D) Linn
