Des Moines, Iowa — Progress Iowa issued the following statement today in response to Governor Branstad calling Donald Trump a “leader” during an appearance on Bloomberg TV:
“This morning Governor Branstad called Donald Trump a “leader” and failed to condemn Trump’s bigotry to a national television audience. Perhaps it’s been so long since the Governor showed true leadership, he’s forgotten what it looks like.”
“A true leader doesn’t encourage hatred in the people he is trying to lead. A true leader inspires confidence, not irrational fear. A true leader stands up to bigoted policies and statements, instead of making excuses for them.”
“When asked about Trump’s suggestion that we ban Muslims from entering the United States, the Governor said that while he disagrees, you have to “look at it context.”
“There is never a right context for hate and religious intolerance. Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the country is not in line with Iowa values, and instead of making excuses for Trump, the Governor should have condemned his policy and his language in unmistakeable terms.”
“Iowans deserve better from their Governor than for him to make excuses for Donald Trump.”
