The Rich Are Too Poor To Pay Taxes
by Dave Bradley
We spent the weekend in Minnesota visiting our daughter and son-in-law. While we were up there, the state government was shut down in a dispute between the legislature and the governor. The crux of the crisis seems to be whether or not taxes will be raised on some of the state’s wealthier folks to help pay some leftover bills from a previous administration and to keep the doors open.I won’t mention the previous governor by name to save him embarrassment. Seems he thought those papers in his drawer were love notes from admirers in the business community. I am sure he wants anonymity after such a mistake. I will do what I can to keep his name out of the public.
Listening to all the rhetoric that was streaming from the radio and TV got me to thinking – rich people today must be poor if they can’t pay taxes. This must be such a source of shame in the society in which they travel. Their forefathers had the wherewithal to pay taxes. But today’s rich can barely afford the big house, BMW, politicians, boats, servants and taxes. Something had to go.
Why, these people are so poor anymore that they can hardly afford to hire American workers for their businesses. The only option that seems to be open to today’s rich is to hire cheaper labor overseas. This must truly be a source of shame when compared to previous generations of American rich.
In recent years Congress has given the rich a lot of help, but alas not enough. There is still a couple things governments at all levels can do to help ease the plight of the rich. For one thing, quit giving things like food to the poor. This will free up money for tax breaks and bailout. And the poor will have a feeling of self-accomplishment as they starve to death without taking aid from anyone.
Another thing local and state governments could do is hand over publicly owned buildings, land, and things like streets and parking meters. The rich could pick up a little pocket change and, of course, everything would run better because it would be run by businessmen. The only problem will be figuring out how to hire the labor in Viet Nam to work over here.
This situation made me feel so bad that I was thinking that maybe we could put some of those canisters begging for money on the counters of convenience stores, especially in Minnesota. You know the canisters I mean – the ones that pay for health care for the poor. (“Joe will die without a new heart” and they collect upwards of $10 for Joe). I would put a picture with a little story on it like “Thurston can only afford one Beemer.”
Of all the sad things I have seen in my life, rich people who can no longer afford to pay taxes is probably the saddest. Half of congress and state legislatures are so sensitive to their plight that they won’t even ask the rich to pay more taxes for fear of embarrassing them.
