An Open Letter to Iowa Governor Chet Culver

An Open Letter to Iowa Governor Chet Culver

“HF2399 requires certain electric utilities in the state to conduct a study of nuclear power at rate payer's expense. This legislation was sent to the Governor on March 30 and he has not taken action on the bill. There is time to urge the Governor to veto HF2399.”

Governor Culver:

I urge you to veto HF2399.

Nuclear power is already part of Iowa's energy mix.

MidAmerican did a similar study in Idaho only to find nuclear power could not be financially justified. I don't believe it is the role of government to subsidize a company that reported $1.071 billion in earnings, (according to Warren Buffet's annual letter to shareholders). If anything, MidAmerican should perform their own research and development and recoup R&D costs when they demonstrate their own viable solution.

Substituting a baseload of nuclear power for the baseload of coal power represents a status quo solution. Iowans deserve better than this.

Where is the creativity? Where is the innovation? No wonder young people are leaving this state when such intellectually bankrupt ideas become law.

Doing this study delays resolution of our energy problems at least for the 13 years it might take to study and build the first plant. We can't delay solutions for Iowans.

Signing this bill into law would be a step into the past rather than a bold move into the energy future Iowans need and deserve.

I urge you to veto HF 2399.

Thank you for reading my note.

Regards, Paul Deaton
