Iowa Lakes Battle Early Death Due to Excess Algae

Iowa Lakes Battle Early Death Due to Excess Algae

by Perry Beeman, Des Moines Register

Biologically
and chemically speaking, [the title of Iowa's Best Lake] goes to …
Yellow Smoke Park in Crawford County, according to
a new report card on Iowa lakes.

Clear Lake, [a] glacial lake and hugely popular vacation spot, ranks among the state's worst lakes in water-quality measures.

[ISU
lake scientist John] Downing said Iowa waters tend to be higher in
nitrogen and phosphorus than Missouri lakes but are similar to other
lakes in the Midwest that are battling early deaths from excess
algae.  Iowa's waters are among the most fertilizer-rich in the
world.
