Call to Action: Demand Tom DeLay Step Down
1) Sign the petition and 2) Send a Free Fax to Speaker Hastert
The Ethics Committee admonished House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) twice
over the past week for improper conduct on three separate matters. He
also has a third black mark on his record from 1999, when the panel
admonished him for yet another matter. We believe the time has come for Rep. DeLay to step down.
He is ethically unfit to serve as a leader of the people's House.
America has higher standards than to let someone with his track record
lead an institution as important to our democracy as the United States
House of Representatives.
Yesterday
in Washington, other advocacy groups and House Democratic leaders
echoed our calls for DeLay's resignation, even as DeLay tried to
dismiss the Ethics Committee's 38-page investigation as partisan politics.
But we cannot let that happen.
This is a critical moment to let our elected officials know that
citizens will not stand for Rep. DeLay repeatedly violating ethics
rules in the House. No one is above the rules, even an elected official
known within his party as “The Hammer.”
Please join us in asking Tom DeLay to step down by signing our petition here:

Common
Cause is disappointed with the Ethics Committee's decision not to
appoint an outside counsel to investigate, as it did in the cases of
former House Speakers Newt Gingrich (R-GA) and James Wright (D-TX). And
we believe Rep. DeLay's improprieties required more than a slap on the
wrist by the Committee.
However,
we commend the Ethics Committee for focusing on the pattern of Rep.
DeLay's ethical violations, as expressed in an extraordinary, sharply worded letter to the majority leader warning him that such future actions would not be tolerated.
IN REGARD to charges
that Rep. DeLay promised special treatment to energy interests in
exchange for campaign contributions at a fundraiser at the Homestead
resort in Virginia in June of 2002, the Ethics Committee concluded in
the letter to DeLay:
Member
may not make any solicitation that may create even an appearance that,
because of a contribution, a contributor will receive or is entitled to
either special treatment or special access to the Member in his or her
official capacity….your participation in and facilitation of the energy
company golf fundraiser at the Homestead Resort on June 2-3, 2002 is
objectionable in that those actions, at a minimum, created such an
improper appearance.
IN REGARD to charges that
Representative DeLay utilized the resources of the Federal Aviation
Administration for partisan purposes when he asked them to use their
resources to track down a plane carrying Democratic Members of the
Texas legislature who were fleeing to prevent a quorum to vote on a
Republican-friendly remap of congressional districts, the Ethics
Committee concluded:
…such
use of federal executive branch resources to resolve an issue before a
state legislative body raises serious concerns under the fundamental
concepts of separation of powers and federalism.
We cannot tolerate this kind of blatant and repeated disregard for Congressional ethics rules. We need your help today. It is time for Representative Delay to step down.
Please sign our petition. Our goal is to collect 100,000 signatures be presented to Mr. DeLay when Congress resumes in November.
Thank you for your passion and commitment to Common Cause.
Sincerely,

Send A Free Fax to Speaker HastertTell House Speaker Dennis Hastert that Rep. Tom DeLay—and his corrupt, strongarm tactics—have got to go!
Enough is enough!
For those of you who don't know DeLay, he's the Republican House Majority Leader, one of the most powerful men in Congress.
Nicknamed
“The Hammer,” he's known for his tough tactics. Now, he'll be known for
his blatant corruption. Wednesday, the House Ethics Committee
reprimanded DeLay for two ethics violations, adding to two other
violations he racked up earlier.
DeLay's four reprimands are for:
1. Enlisting the Federal Aviation Administration to monitor aircraft carrying Democratic political opponents.
2.
Attending a political fundraiser with energy company officials at the
same time that energy legislation was being negotiated.
3.
Strong-arming a Republican member of Congress to side with big drug
companies and HMOs on the recent Medicare bill. (The Republican
colleague originally accused DeLay of outright bribery.)
4. Threatening a Washington lobbying firm because it hired a Democrat as its chief.
Right now the Republican Party is rallying around DeLay.
Let's send them a clear message: repeated ethics violations are simply unacceptable. It's time to get rid of DeLay.
SEND A FAX to
Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-IL), Speaker of the House. Tell him that he must
uphold ethics in government, and demand that Rep. DeLay step down as
majority leader. The fax is already written for you, but you can make any modifications you like.

Two
years ago, when Republican Sen. Trent Lott was caught on camera making
jokes about the segregated South at Sen. Strom Thurmond's birthday
party, Republican leaders demanded his resignation. Surely, four ethics
violations should prompt a similar response.
Rep.
DeLay's dicey actions are an example of a larger problem on Capitol
Hill. This Congress, led by the right wing, is one of the most corrupt
in history. And Rep. DeLay is the ring leader. Whether they're locking
Democrats out of critical meetings, holding midnight votes, or selling
out American citizens to defend corporate interests Tom DeLay and his
cronies have absolutely no shame.
And so they've ended up shaming us all by disgracing the United States Congress.
Let's
hold their feet to the fire. This is a test of the integrity of every
House Republican. Challenge them to stand with decency NOT DeLay. Put
Rep. Hastert to the test, and see if he believes in an honest
government.
