DFIA Meet Up Survey Results and Verified Voting
Well,
the surveys are in from the DFIA Meet Up hosts. The vast majority
of DFIA Meet Up hosts prefer to have the DFA/DFIA Meet Up on the first
Wednesday of every month, as we had been doing during the Dean
campaign. The QC Meet Up will continue with their preferred day
of the first Thursday after the first Wednesday. I will try to
get a button put up on the right sidebar of Blog for Iowa ASAP to
promote DFIA Wednesday Night Meet Ups.
The NYC
Meet Up group, through the State Group Leaders listserv, has proposed
doing something about verified voting at the June 2 Meet Up. It
was determined that we would ask our Meet Up groups to download the
petition from VerifiedVoting.org for offline signing. The DFIA
Meet Up Coordinator, Karene 'kid' Nagel, has agreed to
participate. So, we will be adding this to the DFA/DFIA Meet Up
agenda for next week. (More about that later, but here's the link. You will also find a five-page background summary of the situation, and a two-page flyer.)

In
related news, you may have heard that Gov. Dean's verified voting
petition has taken off like wildfire. In the first 48 hours
alone, the Count Every Vote petition has received 82,000
signatures. (If only we could get that many on the Draft Dean for VP petition. Sigh.)

Go here to sign the Count Every Vote petition.

Go here to send an invitation to everyone you know asking them to sign the petition.

Here is part of a message on the subject from Gov. Dean that was posted this morning on Blog for America.
After
the hanging chads of 2000, the electronic voting machine industry took
off. But if our elected officials choose corporate profits over the
integrity of our process, we may find ourselves in even worse trouble
than 2000. Last time, our democracy suffered because George Bush and
the conservative Supreme Court didn't want to count every vote. If we
don't demand transparency in our voting system now, in the next
election we may not even be able to go back and count the votes at all.
Your
response to the petition has been fantastic! We haven't seen numbers
move like this since the campaign. Everyone in the office kept saying
“incredible” yesterday. Thank you so much for your help. Make sure you tell all your friends to sign it.
Thank you!
