Sunday Funday:Happy Chrismahanukwanza And Winter Too Edition
Anyone else here remember the radio program that IPR used to carry on Saturday nights known as the Vinyl Cafe? I always think of The Vinyl Cafe Christmas stories this time of year because they are gentle, uproariously funny and stand the test of time.
If you are unfamiliar with the Vinyl Cafe, the stories revolve around regular guy Dave, his wife Morley and their children Sam and Stephanie. They are Canadians simply living an average life. The story teller is Stuart McLean who graced the airwaves for decades with his stories before his death in 2017. I hit on the Vinyl cafe memories trying to find a respite from Trump.
We will begin with “Dave Cooks The Turkey.” I have no idea of the chronological order of these tales, but this one seems to be refernced in later stories. So let’s leave the world for a while and travel in our minds to Canada(22 minutes):
What another week! But let’s have fun. Less politics and more Christmas and winter.
A) Ahead of what event scheduled for last Friday, the FIWH made a lie filled address to the nation Wednesday night interrupting regular broadcasting?
B) What former DOJ investigator testified behind closed doors last week on the January 6th coup?
C) In what country do people famously celebrate by eating chicken from KFC?
D) Virginia is replacing its capitol hall statue of Robert E. Lee with a statue of what little known young civil rights leader from the early 1950s?
E) Murders were the centerpiece of the week it seems. What Hollywood couple were slain in their own house by their own child?
F) One of my favorite Christmas songs, “Silver Bells,” is sung by Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell in what 1951 movie?
G) Chris Whipple’s name was all over the media after Vanity Fair published his interview with whom?
H) What Iowa congressmember was reported to no longer live in her district?
I) It’s summer in Australia today. So is Christmas on December 25th down there also?
J) It was cold last week, but according to a quick Google search was the coldest Christmas in Des Moines recorded in 1989?
K) Dan Bongino quit? Wasn’t he the second in command at the – what federal agency?
L) Looks like the world has what new weapon of mass destruction to deal with according to our FIWH?
M) The Edison company created electric lights in 1882. What did Albert Sadacca do that caused Christmas lights to become part of the fabric of Christmas?
N) What word that describes a massive winter storm with blinding snow was coined by an Iowa newspaper in 1870?
O) Even robots are having a tough time. What maker of robotic vacuums filed for bankruptcy Sunday?
P) Speaking of tough times, the House once again adjourned without taking up the ACA subsidies. What group in Iowa will be especially hurt by this inaction?
Q) In the 1947 version of “The Miracle on 34th Street” the story revolves around a person who plays Santa Claus for what department store?
R) It is the first day of winter so the days will be getting shorter or longer?
S) Judge Hannah Dugan of Milwaukee County Circuit Court was found guilty or not guilty on federal charges of felony obstruction in a case from last April Thursday?
T) What ‘singing cowboy’ had 3 big Christmas hits between 1947 and 1950 with “Rudolph the red nosed reindeer”, “Here comes Santa Claus” and “Frosty the Snowman”?
Everybody wants Jack Smith to testify in public except Republicans. What does that tell you???? – Covie
Christmas Presents (21 minutes):
Answers:
A) The release of the Epstein. Files
B) Jack Smith
C) Japan
D) Barbara Rose Johns who led a civil rights inspired strike in her segregated high school in 1951. Her case was one of the 5 heard by SCOTUS under the Brown v. Board cases
E) Rob and Michelle Reiner
F) “The Lemon Drop Kid”
G) the FIWH’s Chief of staff Suzi Wiles
H) Marianette Miller-Meeks
I) Christmas is on Dec. 25 everywhere
J) -22 F
K) The FBI

It Is Way Beyond Time For Universal Health Care
3 minutes:
Following on my previous post concerning the looming implementation of major changes in traditional medicare in 6 states (but I think we can be assured that Republicans will push hard for full implementation quickly) I think it is time that the United States to come into the 21st century and join the world in providing health care for its citizens.
Why? First off it is the only real moral option. To leave any portion of the population without access to health care because of some failing violates every moral code I have ever heard of. Choosing who gets and more importantly who doesn’t get health care, involves making judgment on people that we are not able to make. Especially when people are denied health care because they are too poor.
Secondly, simply to keep ourselves and our families safe from infectious diseases and potentially from those with mental problems it is best for our health that such people have access to health care. Do you seriously want to be in crowded areas with people who have untreated infectious diseases because they can’t get heatlth care for some reason?
Third, it is incredibly cheaper to have a universal system that has low administrative costs for a stremlined system than to have a fragmented system with lots of overhead that is crushingly expensive. If you want to just throw your money away the US health care system is made for you. If you want to spend money wisely and get bang for your buck, spread the health care risk over the largest possible risk pool you can. That would be a national universal health care system!
From Sen Bernie Sanders: (3 minutes)
What do I want for Christmas? A National Universal Health Care System!
As the Republican Party implodes on its greed and corruption, it sure seems that next year’s election would be a great time to push hard for Democrats to campaign on a truly universal health care system. It is what the younger generation wants!
From healthsystemtracker.org:
On average, other large, wealthy countries spend about half as much per person on health as the U.S.
Wealthy countries, including the U.S., tend to spend more per person on healthcare than lower-income countries. However, even among higher-income countries, the U.S. spends far more per person on health.
Comparing health spending in the U.S. to other countries is complicated, as each country has unique political, economic, and social attributes that contribute to its spending. Because health spending is closely associated with a country’s wealth, the remaining charts compare the U.S. to similarly large and wealthy OECD countries.

Destroying Medicare: The MAGA WISeR Scam
Make no doubt that there have been two top targets for Republicans of all stripes since the New Deal became ensconced in our country. The first, of course, is Social Security. Target numero uno since it was signed into law in August of 1935, Social Security is to Republicans the very essence of socialism. Imagine being able to quit working with dignity after a certain age without starving? What a concept.
In a very close second is the Medicare program which provides health care for the elderly. Made into law in July of 1965, Medicare saved seniors from dying way before their time due to lack of funds to pay hospital and other care needs. While it had some drawbacks such as the co-pay that Republicans insisted on, it was still a godsend to Americas elderly. Democrats hoped that a Medicare system for all would follow closely behind.
However, Republicans for 60 years have been able to stop any furtherance of Medicare, at the behest of their funders, Americans inurance companies. While Republicans haven’t been able to kill Medicare they have been able to do the next best thing and wound it in such a way that its full effectiveness has been blunted.
Now it looks like they have a weapon that could wound it to the point where it will be wounded to the point where it can be drastically altered to the point where it will look very much like the gawd awful mess we call privatized health insurance in this country. Like so many Republican initiatives, it has a name that sounds like something that favors people while actually hurting them badly.
It is called the WISeR program (Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction model). This program will very much resemble both the current Medicare Advantage scam and privatized health insurance. The biggest single feature will be the introduction of pre-authorization for procedures. With current gold-standard Medicare today, there is no preauthorization. Now with real Medicare, the doctor and the patient decidewhat care is needed and Medicare is billed for the service.
Here is a brief overview of the WISeR model and why it will be very bad for seniors. (8:20)
Couple things to note here:
- This is supposedly a pilot evaluation that is supposed to last 6 years.
- Since Republicans make things up as they go, I think we can expect them to push to expand the program quickly claiming great (but unsubstantiated) results.
- As noted the rollout will be in 6 states (New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona and Washington). As I noted expect a push to expand the program quickly, so you may be drawn in much sooner than you would like.
- A major note that this change was not done by legislation, but by the CMS without congressional input. However, congressional input could certainly stop and reverse this move. It must be an election issue.
- As also noted in the video, there will be incentives for pre-authorizers to deny claims. This is most certainly the wrong place to put incentives.
- Much of the planning and implementation for this major scam has been done while the media has been covering diversions the Trump administration has been involved in.
- Once again, THIS MUST BE AN ELECTION ISSUE! Republicans now have cover to wreck the essence of Medicare without a peep.

tip of the hat to all-hat-no-cattle.com
From dwt.com we have a current list of items that have been identified as problem areas that pre-authorization will address. I am sure we can expect this list to expand greatly and quickly. Such expansion won’t take place in the light where we can at least complain, but behind closed doors at the CMS under Mehmet Oz. As with this implementation, we the people will have no say as they whittle away at Medicare.
Services Targeted for Prior Authorization
The services eligible for prior authorization under WISeR include:
-
Electrical Nerve Stimulators
-
Sacral Nerve Stimulation for Urinary Incontinence
-
Phrenic Nerve Stimulator
-
Deep Brain Stimulation for Essential Tremor and Parkinson’s Disease
-
Vagus Nerve Stimulation
-
Induced Lesions of Nerve Tracts
-
Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
-
Epidural Steroid Injections for Pain Management, Excluding Facet Joint Injections
-
Percutaneous Vertebral Augmentation for Vertebral Compression Fracture
-
Cervical Fusion
-
Arthroscopic Lavage and Arthroscopic Debridement for the Osteoarthritic Knee
-
Incontinence Control Devices
-
Diagnosis and Treatment of Impotence
-
Percutaneous Image-Guided Lumbar Decompression for Spinal Stenosis
-
Skin and Tissue Substitutes
-
Application of Bioengineered Skin Substitutes to Lower Extremity Chronic Non-Healing Wounds
-
Wound Application of Cellular and/or Tissue-Based Products, Lower Extremities
Providers and suppliers of the above-listed services for Original Medicare beneficiaries will have the choice of submitting a pre-service, prior authorization request through the WISeR model or going through post-service, prepayment review.
Services Have Existing Clinical Validation
Although CMS considers the above services suspect, it should be noted that they all fall under national coverage determinations (NCDs) or local coverage determinations (LCDs), including some that are subject to coverage with evidence development requirements. Rigorous evidence reviews and established standards of care are required before CMS grants an NCD or the Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) grant an LCD. These services have also passed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s “safety and effectiveness” thresholds.
We are coming up on an election year. Republicans have figured a way to destroy one of their major target programs without people hearing about it much in advance so they can do little to stop it. They have also discovered a way to destroy Medicare while their elected officials (congress members) having little blowback on it.
Let me say one more time that THESE CHANGES TO MEDICARE MUST BE ELECTION ISSUES IN 2026! Let Republicans know you will not stand for this kind of backroom dealing!

Holiday Caroling And Rally At Your Favorite MAGA Rep’s Office
Up on Capitol Hill, Mariannette Miller-Meeks
Votes for tariffs! Cuts healthcare! It’s our money she seeks!
She steals from the ones she’s elected to serve
To give her billionaire friends tax breaks they don’t deserve.
This season of giving, she’s taking away
Our tax credits and jobs, food stamps and ACA!
All to pay for more tax breaks for Trump and the richest
She’s all set to come back for a Christmas recess.
As our bills skyrocket this holiday season
We know Miller-Meeks and her greed are the reason!
But we steadfast Iowans won’t give an inch
So join us in caroling: “Welcome home, Grinch!”
After a busy session of downright grinchy behavior, Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks is headed home for the holidays. Join us in welcoming her!
We will meet outside her office in Davenport with coffee, cocoa, and carols tailored to the behavior of our esteemed representative. Come hear from our speakers about the latest effects of Miller-Meeks’ votes and raise your voice in joyous dissenting song.
