Why Courts Matter Iowa Coalition to Rally and Tell Senator Grassley – “Do Your Job”

Why Courts Matter Iowa coalition members, volunteers and supporters will gather at the Polk County Courthouse, Sunday, March 13th at 2:00 pm, to protest Senator Grassley’s obstruction of the Supreme Court. Americans for Democratic Action will rally at the Black Hawk County courthouse in Waterloo, Iowa at the same time.

Iowa — Why Courts Matter Iowa coalition will hold public demonstrations this Sunday afternoon and assemble in Des Moines and Waterloo at 2:00 p.m. The coalition will protest Senator Grassley’s unprecedented obstruction of the Supreme Court nomination process and his refusal to hold a hearing as Chair of the Judiciary Committee until after the Presidential election. Last week the coalition delivered 36,000 copies of Article Two, Section Two of the US Constitution and over 7,000 signatures to Grassley’s offices urging him to “Do your job” and move forward with the nomination process.

“Senator Grassley says he has his own copy of the constitution, but he sure doesn’t act like it,” said Why Courts Iowa Coalition member Matt Sinovic. “Grassley continues to ignore his constituents and makes decisions based on partisan politics instead of our nation’s best interest. To sit on his hands while a branch of our government hangs in the balance is unacceptable, inexcusable and dangerous. Iowans deserve better. Our country deserves better. And Americans waiting for their day in court absolutely deserve better.”

Senator Grassley’s obstruction is nothing new as there are also 5 circuit court nominees currently pending in the Judiciary Committee. His excuse that this is an election year is false as he has been obstructing the courts on every level since becoming Judiciary Chair. Iowans agree that Senator Grassley should fulfill his constitutional duties. A recent poll showed that an overwhelming majority of Iowans are in favor of filling the Supreme Court vacancy this year. The public is invited to attend the “Do Your Job” rally and coalition members will be available to press for comment.
