Thanks in part to your activism, President Obama is considering issuing an executive order on guns, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe just issued his own executive order, and Senate Democrats have rolled out their own comprehensive package of new legislation to curb gun violence.
And, as we all witnessed during Tuesday’s debate, Democratic presidential candidates are making a strong case for taking on the NRA.
The tide is starting to turn and DFA is helping lead the fight, with the upcoming Virginia election becoming a crucial moment. If we win, we will have the momentum we need to break the NRA’s power in the 2016 elections.
This is an opportunity we can’t afford to miss. Please read my brother Jim’s email below to learn more about how you can help DFA take on the NRA, starting in Virginia — and chip in $3 or more to help us win.
Thank you for helping us ramp up our fight against the NRA’s extremist leaders.
Gov. Howard Dean, Founder
Democracy for America
One of my favorite moments from the Democratic debate was when Anderson Cooper asked the candidates who they were proud to have as an enemy — and both Martin O’Malley and Hillary Clinton cited “the NRA.”
Along with Bernie Sanders, who proudly touted his “D-” rating from the NRA, it was clear that Democrats are ready to take on the NRA and pass effective laws to reduce gun violence.
So are DFA members. My brother Howard’s email last weekend laying out our strategy to fight the NRA by electing progressive champions in Virginia got an amazing response. DFA members poured money into these critical races, getting us closer to flipping control of the Virginia State Senate and growing Democratic ranks in the Virginia House of Delegates.
Progressives across America are mobilizing to fight the NRA but — as Howard Dean said — we have to win in Virginia to start turning the tide. Election Day is November 3, and that doesn’t leave us much time. Will you chip in $3 or more to help DFA elect a strong slate of progressives to the Virginia legislature? DEADLINE: Saturday, 10:59pm CT.
Thanks in part to your activism, we’re also seeing signs that Democrats in Washington, D.C. are ready to resume the battle against the NRA. Momentum is building on several fronts:
Tens of thousands of DFA members joined our partners at Everytown for Gun Safety to urge President Obama to issue an executive order to tackle gun violence. The Washington Post reports the president is “seriously considering” doing so.
Our allies in Congress are also ready to act. On Thursday, Senate Democrats unveiled what Politico called a “sweeping package of legislation” on guns, including universal background checks.
Virginia’s governor Terry McAuliffe is taking executive action on guns. But the Republicans who control Virginia’s State Senate by just one seat blocked his legislative proposals from becoming law — and now it’s an issue in this November’s election.
DFA and Howard Dean have endorsed a slate of strong Virginia progressives — Jeremy McPike, Dave Belote, Dr. Jill McCabe, and Sen. Jennifer Wexton for the State Senate, and Jennifer Boysko, Joana Garcia, Elizabeth Miller, Shelly Simonds, Kathleen Murphy, and John Bell for the House of Delegates. These candidates will stand up to the NRA while fighting for policies to attack income inequality and make life better for working families.
We’re building significant momentum against the NRA. But it could come crashing to a halt if we don’t win in Virginia — and Election Day is just over two weeks away. We can win and stop the NRA, but not without your help.
Election Day is on November 3 — time is running out! Please stand with Howard Dean and DFA and chip in $3 or more today to defeat the NRA — and turn Virginia blue.
Thank you for continuing to make an enemy out of the NRA.
