ALEC is behind ag-gag and virtually every other horrifying law currently being passed in states around the country including Iowa – from union-busting and teacher lay-offs to voter ID and anti-abortion laws. Remember that Governor-for-life Terry Branstad is a founding member of ALEC. Don’t believe us. It is right on ALEC’s website. This is not a coincidence. Make no mistake, Branstad wants to do to Iowa exactly what Scott Walker is doing to Wisconsin.
And just for the record, passage of the Iowa ag-gag bill came with support from these organizations who for some reason don’t want anyone snooping around in their bidness:
- The Institute for Cooperatives
- The Agribusiness Association of Iowa
- Iowa Select Farms
- Iowa Cattlemen’s Association
- Iowa Dairy Association
- Iowa Farm Bureau
- Iowa Corn Growers Association and Monsanto Co.
On an even more depressing note, this bill had bipartisan support. The Iowa Senate approved the bill on a 40 to 10 vote. Iowa House approved it on a 69 to 28 vote before sending it to the governor.
Under the new law, food safety, human rights and animal abuse whistleblowers could face up to a year in prison and a fine of $1,500. Link
