Fear of anything resembling a national health care plan has been driving Republicans to do insane things over the the past 7 decades or so. Tuesday’s election may have been their last hurrah in trying to stop America from joining the 20th century on health care. I fully expect John Boehner to continue his juvenile antics and do anything and everything that his group of cretins can come up with as a last ditch effort to stop full implementation of “Obama Care.” But sad to say for Boehner and his neanderthal ilk, the health care plan will be implemented as prescribed and the USA will join most of the rest of the first world countries in having some form of health care.
The only patient that is expected to have a really adverse reaction is the Republican Party. My first thought when we heard that Obama had won is “health care reform survives!” Back in the ’90s, Bill Kristol said something to the effect (and I will paraphrase because I simply don’t feel like looking it up) that if Democrats are able to get healthcare implemented, Republicans won’t be able to elect even dog catchers.
Think ahead to 2014. Much if not all of the health care plan will be implemented. And you can bet that most Republicans will still be trying to tear it down. But you can also bet that employees and many employers alike will be waking up to the fact that they are really fully covered for medical problems and costs are coming under some control.
Even old “Etch-a-Sketch” Romney bowed to the growing popularity of the Affordable Care Act during the presidential debates, saying that he would retain parts of the Act. Come 2014, I expect many Republicans are going to be getting lots of questions as to why they did not support the ACA. Although the ACA has major problems , it is still so much better than our current state of health care, Americans will be grateful shortly after it kicks in.
But of course Republicans will make a couple of last stands to stop its implementation. I expect that John Boehner and his gang are already crafting creative legislation to stop funding of the Act. In Iowa, I have no doubt Governor-for-life Terry “I started ALEC” Branstad will fall all over himself to delay implementation of the health exchange. I expect him to also refuse Medicaid money, even though it is sorely needed and will create jobs.
So implementation won’t be smooth. Republicans know that once implemented it will be popular. They have known that for decades. They also know people are going to ask why they did not support it. Couple this with the Republican Party’s shrinking base of white males over 65, their open disdain for so many groups, especially women, their insistence on ideological purity and their continuing marriage with right wing religious groups and their working only for the rich makes the future look rather bleak for 2014 and beyond.
I would like to recommend they keep to their plans. Maybe even take them a little further.
