Note from the AFL-CIO:
Sore loser Governor goes on attack
Today’s Iowa Supreme Court decision, overruling the Governor’s illegal line item veto was correct and upholds the Iowa Constitution. The decision was unanimous, including the three justices recently appointed by Governor Branstad.
The Iowa Federation of Labor applauds this decision. Clearly the Governor overstepped his authority by attempting to use legislatively directed funding elsewhere, and ignored the will of the Iowa Legislature by closing Iowa Workforce Development offices across Iowa.
In what appears to be a retaliatory action , Governor Branstad has now threated to lay off more than 200 employees working at Iowa Workforce Development . “Iowa Workforce Development provides essential services to Iowans” said, Ken Sagar, President of the Iowa Federation of Labor. “Once again we see Governor Branstad eliminating jobs instead of creating them. If he follows through with his threat, it would only serve to further hurt unemployed and struggling Iowa families. It is ridiculous to think that laying off workers would be a good economic decision or in the best interest of Iowans.”
The hate for Labor is strong in this governor.
Bill Maher hits it right on the schnozz
“If conservatives can call it Obamacare every time a family is forced to file bankruptcy due to medical misfortune or a sick child is dropped by his insurance company or a patient dies because she can’t afford surgery, we get to call it Tea Bagger Care.”
I have Tea Bagger Care now. Can’t wait for Obamacare to kick in. Only an idiot would want to keep the crappy system we have now.
Gilliard wins in Australia
I had mentioned that Julia Gilliard is a true rarity in politics. She is not only a rare female leading a government, but as far as I know the only atheist. She was being challenged by Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister and current Foreign Minister for Labour Party leadership. She prevailed to continue as Party leader and Prime Minister in a 71 – 31 vote.
It starts out
“Marital Status: None of your goddamned business.
Number of Marriages: None of your goddamned business.”
and it goes on from there. Nance Gregg lets loose with a rant on Republicans’ push to control every aspect of a woman’s sexual life.
Is it the Onion, is it a joke, is it reality?
Greg Mankiw, the Harvard professor who serves as one of Mitt Romney’s top economic advisers, has managed to take a shot at two key constituencies – Hispanics and seniors – in a single linked post on his popular economics blog. Under the header “A Fiscal Solution,” Mankiw, who served as Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under George W. Bush, posted an uploaded photo of an unidentified newspaper clip, a joke, that read:
“Budget Cuts: The Immigration Department will start deporting seniors (instead of illegals) in order to lower Social Security and Medicare costs. Older people are easier to catch and less likely to remember how to get home.”
With Mankiw it is really hard to tell a joke from policy.
