Good News Bad News From Mike Gronstal

February 23, 2012

Dear Friend,

First, let me tell you the good news.

Democrats in the Iowa Senate have remained focused on Job Growth, Education and mainstream, Middle Class Priorities.

We balanced the budget without raising taxes and kept Iowa on the path to economic recover and job growth. This week, we approved landmark legislation that invests $20 million annually in a new initiative to put more Iowans back to work by identifying skilled job shortages and ensuring Iowans receive the training to fill those job openings.

We also approved new low-interest, small business lonas, a sweeping tax credit that benefits low-income Iowa families. And we fought to maintain basic funding for our K-12 schools.

We couldn’t have done any of this without your support. Our 1-seat Democratic Majority ensures we can continue to fight for these shared, Iowa priorities. It also allowed us to put a stop to a host of disastrous, anti-middle class legislation from becoming the law of the land.

Please help us expand our 1-seat Democratic Majority in the Iowa Senate. Contribute $25, $50, $100 or $250 to Iowa Senate Democrats today.

Now, the bad news.

Republicans are at it again.

This year, not only have they revived some of their worst, old ideas, they’ve also come up with some new ones. And let me tell you, they’re not even close to mainstream.

1. Republicans want to eliminate the Iowa Department of Education. Even Gov. Branstad thinks its a bad idea. But that didn’t stop Senator Brad Zaun, a Republican Leader from Urbandale from proposing this legislation. This bill would take away Area Education Agencies, eliminate critical classroom resources and toss millions of dollars in state aid down a hole. Poof! Gone.

2. Republicans want to do away with basic school funding (Allowable Growth). This will result in an uncertain, rocky future for Iowa students, parents, and educators.

Please help us expand our 1-seat Senate Majority today!

3. Republicans want to cut $25 million in job creation incentives from the Iowa Department of Economic Development. Last year, Republicans and Democrats worked together to re-vamp the Iowa Department of Economic Development into a public-private partnership that could operate more efficiently and have greater effect in creating jobs in Iowa. But this year, Republicans want to de-fund the new agency by $25 million–at a time when job creation is absolutely critical for Iowa’s future.

4. Republicans want to slash Community College Funding by $6 million. Community Colleges all over Iowa partner with area businesses to develop curriculum that fits the local workforce needs. Students and out-of-work Iowans can quickly learn the skills they need to land the jobs they want. But Republicans’ effort to cut funding will dismantle these crucial programs at the worst possible time for Iowa communities.

If just 1 State Senate seat changes hands this fall, Republicans will make sure that every one of these disastrous proposals becomes law in Iowa. We can’t afford to stop the engines of job creation–and our children can’t afford to miss out on any opportunity to learn the skills they’ll need to compete in today’s global economy.

Help us expand our Democratic Majority in the Iowa Senate by making a contribution of $25, $50, $100 or $250 today!
