and civility at 98.3 WOW-FM and
on-line at 983wowfm.com.
Call (515) 312-0983 or (866) 908-TALK to participate in the
conversation. If you miss the show, you can hear it as a podcast and please

Pal or by check to PO Box 13421, Des Moines, IA 50310. Dear Friends, Last year, a UNICEF report showed that among the world's most well-off nations, the United States ranks in the bottom third in four out of six categories measuring poverty. Perhaps not surprisingly, Black, Latino and Native American children make up the largest percentage of America's poor, with 35% of Black children growing-up in poor families.
Closer to home, rural poverty in Iowa has been worse than urban poverty over the years. That's starting to change, according to David Peters, assistant professor of sociology at Iowa State University. In an article by Dan Kuester, Peters said, “Iowans tend to think about their state as a higher educated, low poverty, nice place to live. It's still a nice place to live, but on this measure of economic well being, we are worsening, particularly in metropolitan and micropolitan areas.”
Tuesday, we'll talk about the changing face of poverty in Iowa and beyond.
Wednesday, we're joined by Jeanelle Boyer to hear about her run across Iowa to raise awareness about local foods and to raise funds for Practical Farmers of Iowa. Also on Wednesday, I'm filling in for Bradshaw from 1:00-4:00 pm.
Thursday, we talk with Colleen Krantz about her book, “Train to Nowhere: Inside an Immigrant Death Investigation.”
So, tune in Monday-Thursday, 7:00-8:00 pm, at 98.3 WOW-FM and online. You can download the show as a podcast, too. Thanks!
