2011 Guide to Visiting the Iowa Capitol

2011 Guide to Visiting the Iowa State Capitol

by Paul Deaton

The 2011 Iowa Legislature convenes on January 10 and the new year has been flush with preparations to let our elected officials know where we stand. Across the state, legislators are meeting with citizens, and this has been going on since the November midterm elections. Everything builds to a crescendo when the body forms next week and Governor-elect Branstad is sworn in on Friday.

Already numerous invitations have been sent to join groups with diverse political views rallying at the capitol
next week to show support for the government. The truth is that none of the author's elected officials is new this year. I know where they stand, as they know where I stand, and that is a position most readers want to be in. The rallies and “days on the hill” serve a “feel good” purpose more than a practical one. If a group you know is rallying next week, join in the fun if you can, knowing that the hard work of advocacy is not accomplished at these events.

What we realize going into the session is that our values have not changed and advancing them will require compromise and finding common ground with the 60-40 Republican House majority, a lesser Senate Democratic majority and a Republican Governor. Yes, the progressive agenda will continue to advance this year, even if it is more of a defensive game. Make no mistake about that.

Blog for Iowa encourages readers to visit the capitol while the legislature is in session. The gallery is expected to be crowded on Monday, and for most of next week. Here are some tips on making a trip to the Iowa Capitol:

The Iowa Department of Administrative Services manages the Capitol Complex. Here is a list of Frequently Asked Questions about visiting or holding an event at the capitol.

Check out the web site for details on setting up your own event, and parking. [Editor's note: Legislators appear to respond positively to free food].

Let your legislator know you will be at the capitol in advance if you seek to meet him/her. Best way to do that is via e-mail, which can be found here. It is best not to assume they will be available when you are there.

Not that it will be popular among Blog for Iowa readers, information about the Governor's inaugural is here.
