Dear Friends,

Over and over again, the prophets of responsible land use have warned that traffic congestion is not a problem we can simply build our way out of. And yet, the road lobby and its allies in state and local government continue to push for more and more pavement. This will be our conversation tonight, Monday, and I hope you'll spread the word and join in.

Tuesday, we talk about data showing that 2010 is on track to be the worst year in more than a generation for death by “natural” disaster. And yes, there are quotation marks around “natural” because man-made activity is what has exasperated the intensity of the disasters and drastically increased the number of casualties.

Wednesday, Dr. Charles Goldman and I talk about the death penalty, and whether the issue is likely to come up in the 2011 legislative session.

Thursday, we'll talk about the Dream Act, which was defeated in the U.S. Senate this past weekend. Why didn't it pass? What's likely to happen next? And will we see any related action on the issue during the 2011 session of the Iowa Legislature?
