Dear Friends,
Monday: To the best of my knowledge, the Iowa Legislature has never debated assisted suicide. But with the issue receiving increased scrutiny nationally, and a recent high-profile case locally, it’s probably just a matter of time before government weighs in.
To me, if someone facing a slow, painful death chooses to take their life, that’s nobody’s business but their own. And with regards to the person assisting a terminal patient who decides to end their life, what sense is there in the government making a criminal out of that person?
Helping us dig-in to the issue on Monday is Rev. Bob Crandall. During 41 years of ministry, Bob developed a reputation as someone particularly sensitive to the needs of people struggling with terminal illness, and last Christmas Bob lost his own brother to cancer. In addition to the issue of government’s role in end-of-life situations, Bob thinks there’s a bunch of questions we should ask ourselves:
How do you assure a loved one it’s alright to give up the struggle to live so they can face the end? How do you yourself prepare to face the death of a loved one? What do you do when death comes suddenly? How do you cope with a loved one on the verge of death during the holidays?
Tuesday, Jeremy Walters joins us to talk about, among other things, his positions on issues affecting the GLBT community. Jeremy ran unsuccessfully for the Legislature this fall, and his Facebook page proclaims: “I'm A God Fearin, Bible Believin, Gun Packin, America Lovin, CONSERVATIVE.” Me, I promise a civil discussion.
Wednesday, Andy Shaffer is at it again, this time discussing “Quantitative Easing.” Ooo, such a big and scary phrase. Well, what it really means is printing a heck of a lot of money to try to jump-start the economy. Andy and I are having a contest to see which one of us is more skeptical.
Thursday, I lay out the twelve-point agenda I expect my political party to champion.
