Daily Show With Jon Stewart Comes to Iowa

Daily Show With Jon Stewart Comes to Iowa

Update:  It was a standing room only crowd at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City last night for The 3rd Annual Cassandra S. Foens, M.D. Lecture with Aasif Mandvi.  UI President Sally Mason was on hand (huge fan of the Daily Show) to introduce Dr. Foens who made possible the annual UI Welcome Week lecture, the first time the UI Lecture Series has received an endowment.

The first laugh came when Aasif Mandvi unexpectedly appeared with bouquets of flowers for both Mason and Foens.  It was non-stop raucous laughs after that.  Mandvi used Daily Show clips in his talk to illustrate some of the particulars of how they make the show.  There was a Q & A period at the end.  And yes, those “field” interviews that you see on the show are real, according to Mandvi.  The interviewees really do say those things.  One of the questioners asked how it is that they allow themselves to be made to not look so good on TV.  Mandvi's reply was that they frequently write them and thank them for putting them on their show.

Young people report the Daily Show as their primary news source and we can see why.  They're the only ones who are reporting accurately, (except maybe Rachel Maddow who did an awesome piece last night laying out the facts about the fake story of this election year being an “anti-incumbent” year).  Check out the video from her show last night, Facts No Match for Instant Media Narrative

Aasif Mandvi, correspondent for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, will speak about “The Real Story Behind the Fake News” tonight at 7:30 at the Englert Theatre in Iowa City. “Mandvi will reveal how the Daily Show analyzes each day's news to bring hilarious insight into the world of politics and international relations.”

The event is sponsored by the UI Lecture Series, and is free and open to the public.

Upcoming via UI Lecture Series:   Bill McKibben:  “Creating a Sustainable World”

Wednesday, October 13 at the Englert Theatre

This lecture will be FREE and open to the public.

Bill
McKibben is an American environmentalist and writer who frequently
writes about global warming and alternative energy and advocates for
more localized economies. In 2010 the Boston Globe called him “probably
the nation's leading environmentalist” and Time magazine described him
as “the world's best green journalist. In 2009 he led the organization
of 350.org , which coordinated what Foreign Policy magazine called “the
largest ever global coordinated rally of any kind,” with 5,200
simultaneous demonstrations in 181 countries. The magazine named him to
its inaugural list of the 100 most important global thinkers, and MSN
named him one of the dozen most influential men of 2009.
