Dear Friends,

Monday, we talk with Cathy Lesser Mansfield about the financial reform bill recently signed by President Obama. Cathy's a professor at Drake Law School, and she describes this bill as “a sea change in how we monitor and regulate financial markets and products. This is the protection Iowans deserve.” Senator Grassley voted against the bill, arguing weakly that it went too far. But our question is, does it go far enough?

Tuesday, we talk about new fears that antibiotic-resistant bacteria could reach consumers through pork. The FDA, USDA, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention all raise concerns about the pork industry's excessive use of antibiotics, many of which are used to stimulate growth. Even the defenders of corporate livestock production are concerned.

Wednesday, we talk about the ongoing debate over marriage, which again surfaced in Iowa this week when the so-called National Organization for Marriage visited Iowa. To be clear, NOM is only for certain marriages, and has supported tactics and an agenda that are markedly discriminatory. There visit to Iowa comes at a time when a recent KCCI poll showed 53% of Iowans in support of marriage rights for same-sex couples.

Thursday, we're thrilled to have Congressman Dennis Kucinich on our show by phone. We'll discuss how “super weeds” have developed to resist herbicides, and how important it is to authorize additional research to study the safety of GMO crops. Dennis recently chaired a public hearing on this subject, and a second hearing is planned. He serves on the Education and Labor Committee and is Chair of the Domestic Policy Sub-committee of the Oversight & Government Reform Committee.
