Dear
Friends,

There are lots of good reasons to have a co-host when you’re involved with talk radio. One reason is that one of the co-hosts — Lynn, for example — can put the brakes on another co-host — Ed, for example — when the latter engages his mouth before his brain is fully in gear.

Well, this week our listeners will “enjoy” seven hours of brakeless talk radio, as I (Ed) go solo on a wide range of topics with some interesting guests. In addition to brakeless, I may end up breathless as well.

Monday, I fill in for Bradshaw from 1:00-4:00. My first guest is Jim Hennager, Peace Party candidate for the U.S. Senate. At 2:00, Jonathan Narcisse joins me to discuss his campaign for Governor. At 3:00, Jeffrey Weiss with Catholic Peace Ministry and I talk about the gloomy situation in Afghanistan.

Also on Monday, at the usual 7:00-8:00 pm time slot, long-time elder-care advocate John Tapscott joins me to talk about problems with the regulation of for-profit nursing homes in Iowa. A recent investigative report by The Des Moines Register’s Clark Kauffman begs the question: “Are nursing home lobbyists essentially silencing state inspectors through campaign contributions that buy-off lawmakers?”

Tuesday, 7:00-8:00 pm, Dan Burden comes on the show to discuss livable, walkable communities. Dan’s nationally known for his work on progressive land-use planning, and he’s in Iowa this week as the keynote speaker at a special event (see below).

Wednesday, 7:00 – 8:00 pm, Allyne Smith and I tangle over the related questions of “Are the debt and deficit that big a deal?” and “Is more federal stimulus good or bad?”

Thursday, 7:00 – 8:00 pm, we take a look at the financial regulatory reform legislation moving through Congress. Does it go far enough? I don’t think so . . . but maybe you’ve got another opinion.
