Iowans Send Pigs To
Haiti
Contributed by Martha Schut and Judy ZobelOn Sunday, May 30th about thirty-five Walnut Hills United Methodist folks gathered to share food and fellowship and hear the story of the Creole pig. The party was a great success and enough money was raised to send 28 Creole pigs to Haiti.
The Pig Party is an educational and fundraising event that supports local organizations in Haiti working to restore the lost Creole pig.
The Creole pig, known as the “peasants’ savings account,” once represented both food and financial security for rural Haitians but, tragically, it was eradicated in the early 1980s when the deadly African swine fever reached Haiti. Subsequent efforts by the US to replace the lost Creole pig were poorly planned and resulted in further impoverishment for many rural Haitians. Now, important efforts are being undertaken to replace the lost Creole pig in a responsible and sustainable way.
Please spread the news and have a Pig Party and help feed the people of Haiti. Contact a justice team member for further information, or click here: Grassroots International/pig-party
