Dear Friends,

I'm going solo this week, with Lynn in Detroit at the National Farm to School conference.  But, of course, she still wants to get her two cents in, namely . . .

Farm to School: A phone call from you could be worth $4.5 billion. The Child Nutrition Reauthorization Bill has stalled and Iowa’s two U.S. senators are in a strong position to move it forward.

In March, the Senate Agriculture Committee unanimously passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. This bill invests $4.5 billion in child nutrition, including $40 million for Farm to School programs. Please thank Senators Harkin and Grassley for supporting the bill (they’ve both signed the “Dear Colleague” letter!), and ask them to use their seniority to schedule a time for the bill to be debated. Call Grassley at (202) 224-3744 and Harkin at (202) 224-3254.

I interview the head of the Iowa Minuteman Patriots.

Wednesday May 19: Ames Live Broadcast: We go live from Ames on Wednesday, talking about small-business development and green jobs. With daily reminders from the Gulf of Mexico of one of the reasons continued dependence on oil is a problem, there is no better time to push for a “Manhattan-project style” commitment to renewable energy. Let’s find out what one central-Iowa town is doing to make a difference. If you’d like to be part of our live audience, please contact me at fallonforum@gmail.com.

Thursday May 20: We talk about workers at nuclear power plants getting sick.

This week’s prize: During Thursday’s show, we’ll give-away a $20 gift card to The Bookstore. This gem of a local business in the heart of downtown Des Moines is a refreshing alternative to the big chain bookstores.
