A Night Out in Cedar Rapids – The Laramie Project

We received this e-mail from Congressman Dave Loebsack this week.

A night out in Cedar Rapids…reminded of more than expected

Terry
and I attended the Laramie Project Friday evening.  The documentary
theater piece revolves around the murder of Matthew Shepard, telling a
story that reminded me of how bigotry and hate can bitterly affect
lives.  Watching the show, I was very proud of the work I did to pass
the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Bill in October, a huge step forward in
stopping crimes motivated by hatred.

But
being proud of the Hate Crimes Bill was not enough.  As we walked into
the production there were protesters from Reverend Phelps' group.  They
were there in the spirit of anger and closed mindedness.  As the
theater goers arrived, ready to learn and to stop the cycle, they were
greeted with the very anger and hatred that had led to such a crime.

Knowing
the need for awareness and for projects like this one to be supported,
I logged on to the Laramie Project website and made a small donation.
Every dollar counts in a fight against prejudice and hatred.

With continued support and appreciation, take care,

Congressman Dave Loebsack
