Iowa Civility Gains Foothold Against Right Wing “Shock Jocks”
Civility wins over hyperbole on a local progressive talk radio program now on the air in Iowa. The Fallon Forum is an island of intelligent, rational talk radio in an ocean of right-wing wackiness. Ed and Lynn Fallon have a slot on 98.3 WOW FM, right between Sean Hannity and Michael Savage (who are right between Glenn Beck and Dennis Miller – that's how unbalanced our Iowa radio stations are – 1 hour of progressive talk for every 11 hours of conservative talk – on this station alone). Multiply that by all of the other Iowa stations that air pretty much the same line-up without the Fallons, and well, you get the idea. But we digress…
Because the Fallon Forum is sandwiched between the right-wing shock jocks (which would be the case no matter where you put it), you would think that the show's callers would be rabid righties with bad manners, but not so. I have listened on three occasions and the conversations have been civil and informaton oriented. Ed and Lynn both have a calm, easy-going style, and there are lots of laughs. Just Iowans having a conversation. Wow.
Last night's discussion was about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict with guest speaker Jonathan Kuttab, a lawyer from Palestine. Tonight's show will feature Leish Barcus, Des Moines City Council candidate, and Thursday, they'll host Bery Engerbretsen with Primary Health Care about health care reform.
The Fallon Forum can be heard Monday through Thursday throughout central Iowa at 98.3 FM and can be live-streamed anywhere on the planet at 98.3 WOW FM.com.
You can call in to the show at (515) 312-0983 or toll-free at (866) 988-TALK and if you want to help progressive talk radio take root in Iowa, please spread the word.
You can donate to help support this very important effort. It will take the support of many like-minded people and organizations. Donations toward the show can be sent to I’M for Iowa, 752 16th Street, Des Moines, IA 50314.
Also, you can advertise on the show. If you want to advertise a small business, an upcoming event, or a political campaign, rates are only $35 for a 30-second ad and $50 for a 60-second ad. Check out the Fallon Forum and support progress toward balanced programming on the publicly owned airwaves in Iowa.
