Dx: Fear Rx: The Facts about Health Care Reform – The Series
by Alta Price, M.D.(cross-posted at Quadsville.com in Dr Dx's Blog)
I thought maybe there were five or six untruths circulating out there about health care reform proposals in Congress, just right for a seven day series. But when I started counting, I quickly came up with forty-three, thanks to an anti-reform email spamming its way through the Internet. I had to make myself a spreadsheet grouping errors into categories to address in a single post. If I refute them one at a time, I’ll still be at it after President Obama signs the bill!
Not that I think my list is complete, especially since it covers only the distortions derived from a cursory reading of the bill in the House of Representatives, HR 3200, America’s Affordable Health Choices Act. More hyperbolic fables about “ObamaCare” abound. As The Series unfolds, I’ll deal with any of the more hysterical claims that come up, to the best of my ability.
There are many legitimate points of disagreement about the health care reform proposals in Congress, including provisions of HR 3200. I discuss some of those at BlogforIowa.com, where I post a Health Care Reform Update every Tuesday. Even if I strongly disagree, those that oppose any changes to our health care system are entitled to their viewpoint and should be encouraged to make their best case. But they are not entitled to their own set of “facts.”
For those of you who want the facts about HR 3200, read this summary at Congressman Bruce Braley’s website.
