Senate Candidate Bob Krause Says Grassley's Votes Burning American Vets
“Maybe this should be called the flag wrapping amendment and not the flag burning amendment”
Bob Krause, Democratic candidate for the U. S. Senate from Iowa, criticized his opponent, Senator Charles Grassley, for boosting a flag burning amendment to the U.S. Constitution while he was “at the same time burning disabled veterans with his votes.”
“Many war-wounded veterans of several wars have been hurt by Senator Grassley’s consistent opposition to adequately fund veterans’ health care. I wish that Senator Grassley would quit burning our disabled American veterans,” said Krause
Senator Grassley last week joined the co-sponsors of the anti-flag burning amendment. “No other image depicts as clearly the freedom and ideals of our country than the American flag,” he said. “It’s the symbol our men and women in uniform have over 200 years.”
Krause accused Grassley of using the amendment as a smokescreen for his failure to support several funding bills that would have provided real support for U. S. veterans “Maybe this should be called the flag-wrapping amendment and not the flag burning amendment,” Krause suggested.
Krause also pointed out that Senator Grassley was chair of the Senate Finance Committee who has been in the position for a long time to increase funding for veterans. He said Grassley’s votes from 2001 to 2006, according to the Disabled American Veterans web site, show that he supported veterans’ issue less than half the time, compared with Senator Tom Harkin, who supported the DAV on nearly 100% of the votes. In one year, Grassley was rated at zero percent in support.
“He effectively kept a cap on veterans health care funding at a time when newly-wounded veterans were streaming into the veterans health care system,” said Krause. “This laid the groundwork for the veterans’ health care scandals that began to break in early 2007,” he added.
