Health Care Reform Update: Tell Senator Grassley Iowans Want A Public Health Insurance Plan Option
by Alta L. Price, M.D.Last week President Obama hosted a high level health care reform summit at the White House that brought together members of Congress and other stakeholders in the health care reform debate to begin to solve the American health care crisis. Both Iowa Senators Tom Harkin and Chuck Grassley were there, since both hold important positions in Congress when it comes to health care reform legislation. While Senator Grassley was at the summit, he told the President and the press afterward that a public option is NOT an option for him.
“There’s a lot of us that feel that the public option is an unfair competitor,” Grassley told Obama.
Well, Senator Grassley, many of us feel the monopoly on health care by insurance companies that have failed to meet the needs of the public is unfair. It is critical to let Senator Grassley know that a public health insurance plan option is a life or death matter for those people who have been shut out or kicked out of the private health insurance market. Senator Grassley needs to know that Iowans are watching him carefully on health care reform, so let’s make our voices heard.
