Latest Iowa Numbers Show No Signs of Tightening
by Linda Thieman
Well, it turns out that all that blather out of the McCain camp about the race tightening up in Iowa was just that.A new poll, released yesterday, shows the numbers in Iowa remaining steadily in the Obama camp with our neighbor from Illinois up by 13 points: 52% Obama, 39% McCain. This, the Big Ten Battleground Poll, was conducted over the course of a four-day period from October 19-22. [MoE 3.1%]
The previous statewide numbers we’ve seen were from the Des Moines Register’s Iowa Poll, taken from September 8-10, showing Obama up by 12 points: Obama 52%, McCain 40%. [MoE 4%]
Of note: In mid-September, when the previous Big Ten Battleground Poll was conducted, the race was very tight. Illinois, Obama’s home state, was firmly in his camp, Indiana leaned red, and the other six states (Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania) were all a toss up. Current numbers indicate that all eight of these states are now solidly Obama by anywhere from 10 (IN), 11 (PA) or 12 (OH) points to as much as 19 (MN), 22 (MI) and 29 (IL) points.
If I were John McCain, I’d be planning my tiny little election night party, too.
