Volunteer Call from Iowa Group for Peace
By Vern Naffier, PCCI
Friends for peace and justice:
It is anticipated that some time near the end of this summer, the 4000th U.S. soldier will be killed in Iraq and that the number of Iowans killed in action will reach 50. In memory of the fallen in battle and to impress on our legislators and the public that we MUST begin withdrawal of our troops from the senseless quagmire in Iraq, a special 4000 Deaths Rally is being planned in Des Moines.
A procession from Nollen Plaza to our Iowa legislators' offices and on to the State Capitol, where a candle light ceremony will be held, will take place soon after the announcement of the 4000th death.
A very impressive and elaborate visual is being prepared to be carried by the marchers.
For this we need 300 volunteers to carry the light weight visuals in the procession (We will let you know what the surprise visual is later. It will be respectful but will carry enormous impact).
Please let me know if you will volunteer as one of the 300. Please also ask others to contact me to volunteer. Volunteers should be ready on fairly short notice to walk in the procession. In addition to the 300 we hope for hundreds more to walk in the procession.
The Rally is being initiated by PCCI and planned by representatives of a number of different peace groups in Des Moines.
Vern Naffier, Board President, Progressive Coalition of Central Iowa, Inc.
Important P.S. We need several volunteers to help with the construction of the visuals. Construction will take place on the property of Tony and Vonnie Salem in Des Moines. First work party will be held Sunday afternoon, July 29. Please let me know if you can help. (515 964-1353 or email)
