CLINIC OFFERS 16TH ANNUAL BISEXUAL, LESBIAN, TRANSGENDER WOMEN'S HEALTH NIGHT
By Karen Kubby
The Emma Goldman Clinic is proud to participate in Pride Month Activities with its 16th Annual Bisexual, Lesbian, and Transgendered Women's Health Care Night. On Thursday, June 21 from 4-7pm, clients will be offered free services including breast exams, cervical exams, Pap smears, annual exams, STI testing and confidential HIV screening. Some walk-in clients can be accommodated, although it is best to make an appointment. Appointments can be made by calling 319-337-2111 and asking for BLT night appointments. The Clinic is located at 227 N. Dubuque Street near downtown Iowa City.
Lesbians continue to face barriers in the search for quality health care. According to one survey, 50% of women partnered with women had not had a Pap smear in the previous 12 months. Upon disclosure of their sexual orientation, many lesbians have experienced discrimination, misinformation and neglect based on some provider's lack of knowledge and the assumptions made about services and testing needed/not needed by women who partner with women.
This festive and educational event provides non-judgmental, culturally versatile health care with attention to the specific needs and health concerns of lesbian, bisexual, and transgender clients.
