Someone Competent for President
by Linda Thieman
My thanks to Sam for giving me a time slot to pop my head out of my
self-imposed political-isolation here at the Hermitage to make a
comment or two. I promise, it won’t happen again.
Well, almost unbelievably, the Iowa presidential campaign is in full
swing – and I mean FULL swing. I’m guessing if they haven’t
declared by now or made extremely loud noises, they won’t be
declaring. I mean, who is left besides Howard Dean to join the
race? And as a devoted Deaniac, I sure hope Howard doesn’t do
it. Couldn’t stand the heartbreak again.
But, in chatting things over with some well-informed progressives and
extremely politically-active activists, there seems to be no rush to
declare for one of the myriad candidates on the smorgasbord. More
than usual, there seems to be a wait-and-see attitude, or even a great
relief that there is still plenty of time to decide before the 2008
caucus comes around.
In short, what many are hoping for, including little ol’ me, is that
this time around, we actually “elect” – and I use that term loosely –
someone competent for president.
But I write this more to perform a service for our politically-active
readers than to just pompously pontificate on political points of
interest to the Iowa progressive community.

Demetrius also has a “people-powered” website over at CafePress.com,
in which he sells T-shirts and such that he has designed.
Beautifully done, you can already wear your candidate on your sleeve
(chest, actually), and if you haven’t decided yet, you can wear the
all-encompassing “Someone Competent for President” shirt when you go
hear the candidates speak. I haven’t laughed so hard in ages.
Just thought you might like to know.
