Great opportunity to be involved with grassroots membership and activism for an Iowa-based version of a national issue campaign.  Sensible Priorities Action is a spin-off of Iowans for Sensible Priorities, founded by Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream.

We are a grassroots campaign that will make clear to the 2008 presidential candidates what federal spending priorities are important to Iowans, and pledge to support the candidate(s) who commit to a budget that put the needs of people before special interest lobbyists.

Primary job responsibilities are:
-Recruit supporters for the campaign who pledge to attend their caucus and support a candidate who endorses the Priorities campaign.
-Recruit volunteers for “bird dogging” presidential candidates.
-Recruit elected officials and community leaders in your area as endorsers.
-Coordinate bird dogging in your area.
-Help plan and turnout crowds for events.
-Make connections with local and regional organizations.
-Assist the communications director with media contacts in your area.
-Attend events and speak on behalf of Sensible Priorities Action.

Qualifications and desired characteristics:

-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
-One to two years experience with a nonprofit or political campaign, either as a volunteer or staff person.  Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
-Knowledge of Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
-A valid Iowa driver’s license (or ability to get one fast) and a reliable vehicle.
-Understanding of online communications strategies.
-Knowledge of and experience with progressive advocacy groups.
-Ability to work effectively as member of a team.
-Commitment to and passion for our mission, including a willingness to work evenings and weekends.

This is a full-time, salaried position with fully-paid individual health and dental and two weeks vacation.  Salary is $2,200 per month.  In addition, mileage will be reimbursed and staff will be furnished will a cell phone and laptop.

We are hiring 10 field organizers to be located in Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, Dubuque, Davenport, Iowa City/Cedar Rapids, and Ottumwa.  Staff outside of Des Moines will be expected to locate their own office space or work from home. This position reports to the Director of Grassroots Organizing in Des Moines.
