Farmers Needed for Harvest of Hope Winter Farmers' Markets
By the Iowa Farmers Union
“Harvest of Hope winter farmers’ market sales will begin happening at Iowa churches this November! Harvest of Hope sales, which started in Iowa only last winter season, are sponsored by Churches’ Center for Land and People (CCLP), a 501c(3) ecumenical group based in Middleton, Wisconsin which does rural advocacy and outreach around issues of sustainable agriculture and responsible stewardship of the Creation. (The organization's website may be viewed at www.cclpmidwest.org.) FARMERS ARE STILL NEEDED TO VEND AT THIS AND OTHER SALES!
“Products for sale at Harvest of Hope sales vary widely according to availability and which farm vendors are present, but they have included such things as meats and eggs, honey, sorghum, maple syrup, root vegetables, dried herbs and spices, dried and frozen fruits, wool and woolen products, skins and leather goods and handcrafted goat milk soaps. All farm vendors present must use organic or sustainable principles of farming and production. There is no stall fee to be a vendor. Aside from providing additional winter income for the vendors present, all vendors present must agree to raise their prices by 10% and then–provided that they sell more than $150 worth of goods at any one sale–donate this 10% back to Churches Center for Land and People to help create the Harvest of Hope Emergency Fund. Once this fund is up and running, it will offer small grants to any Iowa farm family that encounters a financial crisis situation.
“Harvest of Hope sales this winter are scheduled to occur in Ames, Burlington, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Dubuque, Marshalltown, Solon and West Des Moines. For more information, to inquire about being a farm vendor, or for a complete schedule of Iowa Harvest of Hope sales, please contact Jim Earles, Iowa Project Coordinator, at iowaharvestofhope@yahoo.com or 563-588-2935.”
