Loebsack Nominated by the 2nd District
By Ellen Ballas
Dave Loebsack, Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress, was nominated at the 2nd District Convention in Mt. Pleasant on April 29th
Last week's second district convention in Mt. Pleasant was more than a great example of democracy in action; it stood out as a shining beacon of progressive hope. Besides nailing down the platform and other important business, the convention this year had a special purpose – to elect Dave Loebsack as the Democratic candidate for Congress. It was truly a remarkable event, but not because there was any doubt that Dave would be unanimously endorsed. It was remarkable because of the energy and excitement in the room about the campaign and the gut feeling that this time we will vote Jim Leach out of office.
Bill Olmsted gave Dave a great introduction. He hit the nail on the head as he spoke to the frustration we all feel toward the ineffectual meandering representation of Jim Leach. The Republican House leadership knows that when every last vote matters Leach will be there for them with his Republican vote. The rest of the time they cut him loose to flounder unproductively as a moderate Republican who ultimately tries to mask himself as a Democrat in order to appease 2nd district voters. To be clear, Dave Loebsack is the Democrat and he will not be beholden to anyone but the people of the second district. As our “Voice for Change” Dave will “lead when it matters, not when it's safe. He will do what's right, not what is easy.”
A spontaneous demonstration occurred as Dave took the stage, with people holding signs and chants of “Dave, Dave, Dave.” It was an overwhelming expression of support and confidence in Dave.
The event must have been a great introduction to the Loebsack campaign for the new Field Director, Jennifer Tuttle. Jennifer comes from Rhode Island where she was the Program Coordinator for the Rhode Island Sierra Club. Before that, she worked in Colorado as the Field Director for Democrat, Jay Fetcher. Jennifer jumped right in and did a great job at the district convention organizing and revving up the crowd. When you see her knocking on doors in the 2nd district, please make sure to give Jennifer a big Iowa welcome.
Get involved in the Loebsack campaign – we have a real opportunity to take back the second district and bring real leadership to Congress. Please visit the website at http://www.loebsackforcongress.org or call the campaign at 319-351-DAVE.
