Hurricane Evacuees Arrive in Iowa
From the Des Moines Register:
About 200 people or more evacuated from areas hit by Hurricane Katrina will arrive in Des Moines today, state officials say.
The
first group 18 evacuees from New Orleans arrived about noon. That group
of evacuees included residents who had stayed in the city and were
being forced to leave, New Orleans officials told the Register.
Two
evacuees were taken directly to Des Moines hospitals upon arrival at
the airport. The rest, along with volunteers who met them at the
airport, arrived at the Iowa State Fairgrounds about 1:30 p.m.
The
evacuees were taken to the Varied Industries Building, many carrying
only a plastic bag, a single suitcase or a backpack. Two dogs and a cat
also made the trip to Iowa. One dog accompanied its owner to the
hospital, officials said.
The State of Iowa is jumping in to help with relocation, health care and other needs, utilizing the services of the DHS to help.
