Science Center Opening In Des Moines
While
this strays from the normal “political” topics, every now and then some
amazing things happen that deserve a little fanfare. The opening
of the new Science Center in downtown Des Moines is one of those occurances.
From
tot to retiree, the Science Center of Iowa is dedicated to promoting
lifelong learning and to providing activities to engage families across
generations. Six themed experience platforms support innovative
hands-on exhibits and live programs, and three theaters including
Central Iowa’s first IMAX Dome Theater truly offer a dynamic range of
activities for participants of all ages. Parents, grandparents and
seniors will be able to embark on an individual journey of discovery or
share the experience with their child or grandchild from preschool to
preteen and beyond.
Many
events that I've seen over the past few years – from “evolution”
debates to pollution controls to organic farming – require a
citizenry that is both scientifically literate and open to new
approaches to learning.
The high
profile Science Center is not only an event, but an opportunity to push
science and science education in the public square. It doesn't
hurt that the staff looks like they've put together a fascinating
facility and experiences for all ages. (Hey, science can be fun,
too!)
Here's to best wishes for the success of the new Science Center!
