Sally Vitamvas: Candidate Redefines 'Run' for Office

When Democrats asked 55-year-old Sally Vitamvas of Silver City to run
for the Iowa Legislature, they had no idea she'd take it so literally.
For the
past two weeks, the single mother of three grown children has been
running on the side of southwest Iowa roads, going about four miles an
hour. Her shirt and the car that follows her advertise “Vitamvas for
Iowa House.”
…The
political newcomer, frustrated by a lack of name recognition after
weeks of campaign door-knocking, came up with the idea of running while
in a parade this summer. People laughed when she fell behind, had to
run to catch up, and told people that she was literally running for
office.
“I have
to say, it's turned the campaign around,” Vitamvas said Thursday, as
she ran in the rain and waved at trucks and cars passing by. “Ever
since I started this run, everywhere I go, people know who I am.”
