Maytag Strike Set To End July 6

CBS MarketWatch

NEW YORK
(CBS.MW) — Union workers at Maytag's Newton, Iowa, manufacturing
facilities are set to return to work Tuesday, ending a near four-week
strike.

The
home-appliance maker said late Friday that members of the Local 997 of
United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers
(U.A.W.) ratified the new labor agreement, which addressed the
contentious cost issues of retiree health benefits and work rule
flexibility.

As a
result, production and maintenance employees that were actively
employed on June 10 were instructed to return to their normal shifts
and assignments on July 6.

“The new
contract is a positive development,” said Mark Krivoruchka, senior vice
president of human resources at Maytag. “We are pleased that union
members recognized that cost improvements are a necessity in the
competitive environment.”
