Iowa in the News: Election Day!

Don't forget to vote today!

Big primary turnout expected

Iowa City Press-Citizen

Voter
turnout should be brisk in [today's] Democratic primary election to
select three Johnson County supervisor candidates and a sheriff
candidate, a county election official said.

“Based
on absentee requests, they are running above our previous primary, so
we expect it to be at least as good as that,” deputy auditor Dan Moen
said. “I would expect turnout to be high, but it's hard to tell based
solely on that.”

As of
Thursday, six days before the primary, more than 1,150 people had
requested absentee ballots. That's 856 more than the number of early
voters in the 2002 primary and 617 more than the 2000 primary.

Primary elections [today]

The Hawk Eye, Burlington, Iowa

One U.S. Senator. One representative. Six state legislators, 11 county supervisors, four auditors and four sheriffs.

Add it all up and you get one very busy primary election. And anyone can vote.

Anyone
who is registered, that is. The deadline to do that is already gone, so
don't run down to the courthouse and try. It won't work.

Otherwise, participating in Tuesday's party primaries is as simple as sunshine.

Unfortunately,
the experts forecast a gloomy turnout. When Des Moines County Auditor
Carol Copeland called interest in the election “staggering,” she meant
it in a bad way.

Kinds of Elections

TheIowaChannel.com

General Elections – an election to fill public offices.

Primary
Elections – an election prior to the general election in which voters
select the candidates who will run on each party's ticket. Primaries
are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders, and may
be open or closed.

Open
Primary – an election that permits voters to choose on Election Day the
party primary in which they wish to vote. They may vote for candidates
of only one party. (A blanket or “free love” primary is a type of open
primary. In the voting booth you mark a ballot that lists the
candidates for nomination of all the parties, and thus you can help
select the Democratic candidate for one office and the Republican
candidate for another.)

Closed
Primary – the selection of a party's candidates in an election limited
to registered party members. Prevents members of other parties from
“crossing over” to influence the nomination of an opposing party's
candidate.
