Iowa Likes Kerry, But Not Vilsack As VP

Jun. 1, 2004 – Massachusetts senator John Kerry could carry the state
of Iowa in the 2004 United States presidential election, according to a
poll by Survey USA released by WHO-TV. 48 per cent of respondents would
vote for the prospective Democratic nominee, while 45 per cent would
support George W. Bush.
Georgedick Bushcheney holds a three per cent lead over a potential Democratic ticket with Kerry and Vilsack.

Iowa Casino Groups Gave $100,000 in Campaign Contributions

As reported by the Des Moines Register: “Groups tied to Iowa's casinos
showered state lawmakers with nearly $100,000 in campaign contributions
just before the 2004 legislative session, which cleared the way for a
significant expansion of gambling in Iowa.
“The total dwarfs the four groups' combined donations of less than $12,000 in all of 2003. . . .
. . .
“The Legislature's top six leaders reaped the biggest campaign
donations from gambling interests. All six voted in favor of the
gambling bill, which authorizes table games at Iowa's three
racetrack-casinos and allows state regulators to approve new casino
licenses.

Voters will head to the polls Tuesday

DAVENPORT
– Area residents will be going to the polls next Tuesday, June 8, to
determine the slate of candidates facing each other in the fall
elections.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Here's a list of candidates seeking their party's nomination:
Scott County
The
Scott County Board of Supervisors' race has garnered the most interest,
with three Democrats and six Republicans vying for the two slots
available for each party. Tom Cruise, Jim Hancock and Karl Rhomberg
make up the Democratic slate. On the Republican side, Neil Baker, John
Carroll, Jon Curtis, Richard Golinghorst, George Nickolas and Tom
Sunderbruch are hoping to represent their party in the fall election.
There is no opposition in the county auditor's race, which will have
Democrat Karen Fitzsimmons . . . .
