News & Notes from Diebold & Deanland

Quick!  Go Visit This Website Before Diebold Files Suit To Shut It Down!

If you want a good chill first thing in the morning, go visit The Diebold Variations. These faux posters criticize the vote-stealing tendencies of the embattled Diebold company.

Looks
like the Republicans bought the Cliffhanger version in 2000.  But
I hear they've upgraded to the Mandate version for 2004.  Florida
is already in the bag by no small margin and they are hard at work on
Ohio.

Iowa
ought to be okay, although I hear over in Clay County they are mighty
proud of their new cheat, I mean touch-screen voting, machines.
When they did a recount, it seems the voting machines' paperless count
matched the e-voting machines perfectly.  That's right.  You
heard me.  The original machine count matched the machine
recount.  Well, glad to hear it.  So, in Clay County, they
are all happy and relieved because they have been reassured that Santa
Claus DOES exist.  Now, who did it record that I voted for?
Do you think one county is enough to throw the presidential election in
Iowa?

Hey, who needs Democracy anyway?

This Can't Hurt

According
to WCAX-TV Channel 3 News out of Burlington, Vermont, Howard Dean has
signed a contract to write a weekly newspaper column.  The
political column, which will start running next week, will be carried
by 700 newspapers.

Well, whew!  That's way better than a Jerry Springer-like talk show.

I think we need to focus on the comments from the DEANRR: See ACTION:
    Howard Dean — Newspaper Columnist
    http://www.wcax.com/Global/story.asp?S=1900788&nav=4QcSNTMz
“Former Vermont governor, and presidential candidate Howard Dean
    has a
new job as a newspaper columnist. Dean has signed a deal with a
    California
firm that will distribute his column to about 700 newspapers across
    the country.
Laura Gross, a spokeswoman for Dean's Democracy for America
    organization,
says the column will give Dean a chance to talk about political
    issues.
Dean's first column will run next week.”

    Hi, Bev!
I decided not to go with the DeanRR alert because I think they jumped the gun a little bit. First, what we would have to do is determine if the local paper carries Cagle Cartoons, the syndicate that is carrying the Dean column and offering it up to the 700 papers who subscribe to their service. Then, you'd have to determine if your paper had decided to specifically not print the new Dean column.
So, if the paper does carry Cagle Cartoons and has decided NOT to run the Dean column, then it would definitely be worth writing in and asking them to carry it. But, if they don't already subscribe to Cagle Cartoons, it seems unlikely that they would make a major financial decision to lay out the funds for a subscription based on some letters requesting a specific column.

Hi Linda, so what do you suggest we do at the local level to follow up on this matter?
    Thanks much! Bev

    Hi, Bev!
Did you see I put up your health bridge suggestion? I'll be putting up your MOB idear some time this weekend, I think. Really appreciate all your help!
First, I think we need to ascertain if our local papers carry the Cagle Cartoons syndicate. One way to tell this is if your paper carries the Michael Reagan and/or the Dick Morris columns. That's Cagle. Also, Cagle carries 11 political cartoonists – Daryl Cagle, Mike Lane, Mike Lester, Larry Wright, Jeff Parker, Sandy Huffaker, Cam Cardow, Brian Fairrington, Monte Wolverton, Mike Keefe and Vince O'Farrell. So, if your paper carries any of these cartoonists, you'll know to be on the look out for the Dean column.
Alternately, you could give your paper a call to see if they subscribe to Cagle Cartoons.
So, I guess we'll know by next week who is carrying the column and who is not. Folks should let us know if their local paper carries Cagle but not the Dean column, and we'll get on it ASAP!
