Heaven and Hell Duke It Out
in South Dakota
One of
the most critical elections in 2004 will take place on Tuesday, June 1,
in one of the most Republican states in the country. Democrat
Stephanie Herseth is locked in a dead heat battle against her
Republican challenger.
21st
Century Democrats has leant Herseth six organizers. We are managing Get
Out The Vote operations in battleground precincts that will likely
decide the election.
Please help us put Herseth over the top: www.21stdems.org/herseth
Stephanie
Herseth is a fantastic candidate in her own right. What's more,
national commentators have made clear that the path to a Democratic
Majority in Congress runs straight through South Dakota. If we want to
replace Denny Hastert and Tom DeLay, we must win in South Dakota.
Larry
Diedrich, Herseth's opponent, has been running as a Bush Republican in
a state that Bush carried by 22% in 2000. Laura Bush herself has
visited South Dakota three times during the campaign, as has Speaker
Hastert. The Republican party has funneled millions into
this race. Karl Rove has personally overseen the collection of
Diedrich's special interest money.
A
Herseth win not only puts us on track to retake the House, it sends a
clear message that Americans are rejecting the failed leadership of
George Bush and the divisive politics of Tom DeLay and Karl Rove.
With your help, we can beat the Republican machine and put Stephanie over the top.
Herseth
has a chance in South Dakota because she is a smart, articulate and
passionate candidate. At the age of 33, she has already had
an impressive career, leading the South Dakota Farmers Union
Foundation, serving on the faculty of the Georgetown Law Center,
clerking for a U.S. Appeals Court Judge, and advocating for the rights
of Native Americans and the elderly.
We think
Herseth's political and policy skills will make her a star in
Congress. Raised on a family farm, she shows that standing
up for public education, quality health care, and fair taxation can be
consistent with rural values. She is the kind of
smart, young woman our party needs.
Please help us elect a future leader in the Democratic party: www.21stdems.org/herseth
Recent
polls show Herseth with a slim lead. In special elections,
however, polls are notoriously unreliable. According to the Sioux Falls
Argus Leader, “everyone agrees that voter turnout will determine the
outcome.”
That's
where we come in, helping Herseth build a Get Out The Vote operation
that will bring victory on June 1st. We've already knocked on the
door of every registered Democrat in two large towns. Now we're
building lists and recruiting volunteers for the decisive final weekend
of the campaign.
In a
state where the Senate race in 2002 was decided by 524 votes, our field
organizing could be the first step to restoring Democratic control of Congress.
Sincerely,
Kelly Young
