70th Anniversary of Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa

This
week marks Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa’s 70th anniversary.
Nearly three quarters of a century ago on this date, the first meeting
of the Iowa Maternal Health League took place.

Twelve
women gathered and pledged to organize a birth control league in Des
Moines. Only months after their pledge, The Iowa Maternal Health League
began to provide “needy married women” with diaphragms, condoms and
contraceptive jelly.

This was no small task to undertake in 1934, as contraceptive information and supplies were classified as obscene material. These courageous women began the mission that we continue to fulfill today.

PPGI
owes these bold and compassionate women a deep and sincere debt of
gratitude. May this anniversary serve to strengthen our unwavering
commitment to the men, women and families across Iowa in need of
quality, reproductive health care, education and advocacy.
