Dear Friends at DFIA,
It is
with great pleasure that I announce my candidacy for the 6th District
Iowa Senate seat. This district includes all of Franklin, Hancock,
Winnebago, and Worth counties, and most of Cerro Gordo county.
I have
chosen to run for the Iowa Senate after seeing the differences I have
made in local government during my tenure as Mayor of Swaledale. Under
my leadership as Mayor, many projects were accomplished: unused,
abandoned properties were condemned, clearing the way to build a
community park, and tax incentive plans were put into place to
encourage growth, in both new residential and business
construction. Over $40,000 in grants were applied for, received,
and used to replace old playground equipment, upgrade fire fighting
gear, and replace an aging fire truck. Swaledale now has an economic
development plan in place that will serve the needs of current
residents, will bring travelers to town, and will attract new
residents. This success story of one small town is my vision for all of
north Iowa.
I was
born in Mason City and grew up in Swaledale, attended
Rockwell-Swaledale School and graduated in 1982. After living briefly
in Iowa City, my wife, Celeste, and I left Iowa for Rhode Island, where
we lived for fourteen years. Longing for the quality of life I had
grown up with, we chose to move back to north Iowa in 1999. North Iowa
is still a great place to live, but, more and more, I see the quality
of education, our environment, and the state's economy being
compromised by the decisions of our elected leaders in the Statehouse.
North
Iowa is a great place; but it deserves a stronger voice in the Iowa
Senate. With tight budgets facing every level of government, cities and
rural communities need an advocate that will fight to protect our
quality education system, to protect our valuable environment, and our
fragile economy. I want to be your advocate.
My campaign is already in high gear; I have formed a committee, I am actively fundraising
and I'm out knocking on doors asking for your support. My opponent is a
two-term incumbent who will run a well-financed campaign. I know I
won't be able to outspend him, but I am confident I can outwork him.
The key to my campaign is working hard to spread my message to each
every constituent in Senate District 6.
Will you
help me? I won't be able to spread my message alone. A campaign of this
magnitude will require investments from people just like you – people
who care about education, the environment, and Iowa's economy. If you
are unable to make a monetary investment, please consider an investment of time by volunteering with my campaign.
Please visit my website and consider investing in my campaign today for a better North Iowa.
Sincerely,
John Drury
Iowa Senate District 6 Democratic Candidate
