Doctors for Dean Go To South Dakota – And You Can, Too!
Stephanie
Herseth is running for the open seat in South Dakota vacated by Bill
Janklow. It is the only special election between now and November. A
victory in SD, coming on the heels of Chandler's victory in Kentucky,
will give us two consecutive wins in Republican states, and terrific
momentum going into November. We need to show that Republicans can be
beaten on their own turf! Stephanie is very popular in SD, comes from a
prominent political family there, and did very well against Janklow in
2002. Her opponent, Larry Diedrich, is a state senator and farmer, and
cookie-cutter right-wing Republican.
The
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is flying 600 Hill
staffers to Sioux Falls on Friday May 28, and Physicians for a
Democratic Majority will be meeting them there with 14 volunteers. We
will be campaigning over Memorial Day weekend and getting out the vote
on Tuesday June 1. We will also be doing a health screening on Sunday
or Monday, either at a senior center or an Indian reservation.
Our
group is an outgrowth of Doctors for Dean, and our policy director is
Peter Van Vranken, who was Gov. Dean's top healthcare advisor. We are
dedicated to supporting candidates who support universal access to
healthcare as a top domestic priority. I hope you'll check out our
website at www.demdocs.org. Please spread the word to your colleagues and friends!
We would
love to have doctors and other interested folks from surrounding
states, including Iowa, join us in South Dakota. The DCCC is providing
free housing; you would need to sign up at www.dccc.org/sd. Please bring your white coats and stethoscopes!
